Despite the condition having an impact on everyday life, 82 percent of brits who show symptoms are yet to seek advice.

IBS - or Irritable Bowel Syndrome - can be a demanding and frustrating condition to live with - and so it is vital not to ignore its early warning signs

IBS and Gut Health Dietitian Kirsten Jackson has warned: "Ignoring digestive symptoms is a scary concept because your symptoms could be caused by many different conditions, including cancer." They need to have started six months or more prior to being able to be diagnosed and must occur at least one day a week for the past three months.

In the long-term, the low FODMAP diet process, where someone reduces their intake of "fermentable carbohydrates", could help ease symptoms.
