This was announced by Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla, who was speaking on the first day of the mental health conference in Pretoria on Monday.
South Africa ranks among global countries with high mental health issues and has scored the lowest average on the mental health scale. Phaahla stated while the department had grown the number of human resources available for mental health services, the equitable distribution of such resources needed attention. While the Western Cape and Gauteng have 50 and 72 psychiatrists working in the public sector, respectively, Northern Cape and Mpumalanga only have three and four psychiatrists working in the public sector.
