Overall inflation on food and drinks across eight major supermarkets - Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose - rose to 17.2% in March. But staple foods in the British diet have seen much bigger price increases.

While supermarkets' own-label budget items are still the cheapest products, they saw the highest rate of inflation among all products - up 24.8% in March compared with the same time last year.

Which? is encouraging supermarkets to make their budget lines more widely available and pricing more transparent. "Supermarkets must also provide transparent pricing so people can easily work out which products offer the best value."

Stop giving us 0% sugar bulshit drinks

Sunlit uplands and what not

Thank God for Brexit and its lower food prices.

Greed-fuelled post-brexit capitalism. Enjoy fellow plebs

mariachetcuti1 The fact that certain supermarkets can lower prices for loyalty card customers shows they are overpricing and profiteering. supermarkets profiteering pricing ToryBritain

Forget that tell us how much profit they stole from us 😠😠😡😡

Brexit bonus!

I'm not sure how these figures are being generated, when my banks app tracks my grocery spend and sent me a message that my spend is up 50% on the year, and I just went to Lidl to see baked beans up over 70% on the year.

Price gauging

This is just unsustainable

Oh well at least we're working to save farming practices in the UK and Europe. Good to see farmers agreeing with the sensible policies being forced on them.

Its not inflation, its blatant profiteering.

sazmeister88 When are the food riots?

The headline numbers hide bigger rises on specific food items.… Example : a pack of 4 chunky kitkats was £1 a year ago. It’s now £1.50. You only have to look at Poundland’s £1..£1.25…£1.35 trajectory to see that food inflation is running much higher than the gov figures show.

simonmaginn Good thing interest rates are also … oh wait

No need it's just greed

Box of six eggs 5 months ago £0.90 same box of eggs this week £2.70. Will be cheaper to keep a chicken soon

And the pay rises that workers are being offered are an insult.

Good to see the Tories goal of halving inflation is going so well, eh RishiSunak ?👍 ToriesUnfitToGovern

I’m struggling to believe that inflation will now drop as fast as many people are predicting. It feels like inflation is becoming more entrenched if anything

Therese Coffey said in the select committee we're good, though.

Beany_1 That's a generous figure, most of us who actually shop would say it was at least 100% and that's probably a low estimate

The BoE need to cut interest rates asap. They are doing nothing to resolve inflation which is going up because of macro market and geopolitical reasons. Our monetary policy will do nothing to resolve the inflation. Growth is key but Sunak and jeremyhunt are anti growth high tax

Just over 12 months ago, these fries sold for 89p a bag Yesterday, they were selling for £1.99 - a 123% increase over the last 12 months. 123%!!! We are either being monumentally fleeced, or we aren’t being told the real story…. FoodInflation Prices CostOfGreedCrisis

17.2%...and the rest! Even trying to be careful has meant more than 17.2%!

Don't worry Tescos only made 2 billion pound profit

Why haven't you talked about the brexit border control affect in 2024?

Off the scale…… soon be wheelbarrowing in money for a thin cut loaf!!

Remember when Thatcher gaslighted the country with 'Competition will bring down prices' - CapitalismAndGreed has brought nothing but misery to TheMany Terrified of forces like Corbyn & FrenchProtests they're trying to control our spending via digitising currency. Nope.

What people seem to miss with this is that even if inflation is brought down to 1%, things will *not be cheaper*. They will just continue to get even more expensive, just more slowly.

All part of the wef by 2030 you will own nothing and be happy

yes; and I can feel it!

Bottle of olive oil now almost same price as a bottle of wine!

ToryBrexitDisaster Britain voted for lies, when will Brits call the Tory Gov to reverse BrexitDisaster

Malnutrition now on rise in UK ,.

Don’t worry. Rishi is on the case …. he’ll soon have it at 8.6%. What a leader he is….🫠

Well that kind of rise will soon eat into April's increase to the minimum wage (excuse the pun). Could this be a hint that profits are now driving inflationary pressures rather than wages?

BREXIT

BethRigby Any particular reason for the Tesco PR blurb at the close of the piece? It adds nothing to the story and rather gives the impression of pandering obsequiousness. Just sayin'.

Anna_Soubry Brexit is converting Aldi into Waitrose price wise 🙄

PandaScottish Who created this inflation, it wasn't the workers who have had a real terms pay cut

I’m not bothered we just don’t buy so much and waste so much job done 👍👍

And remember - the UK only produces around 50% of its food The rest is imported

Ripping us off! While they still make BIG PROFITS

carlbaker Latest food price inflation for Germany is 22.3%. It’s a global phenomenon.

BethRigby Mcvities Digestives 2 pack is up 50% since last year... Big corporations price gouging while they can !

Unless the media and politicians are going to fess up and tell the truth about Brexit this is going to get a lot worse.

BethRigby *rubs hands* so much delicious profit to be made!

Better put mortgage rates up then and not tax supermarkets... wtf

BethRigby you should investigate, revenue increases versus like for like sales. They are selling less but revenues are up due to price gouging.

BethRigby But profits up at 8 major supermarkets

Profiteering

Price Gouging in action

When are they going to be called out for profiteering.

But they said Brexit would bring food prices down. 🤷‍♂️🤔

I thought our inflation was caused by pay rises 🤔

I've reached hashtag angry. Don't push me or I'll tut and roll my eyes. Grrr.

Nah!!!! Conservatives are HALVING inflation!

Beany_1 Take note please folks ! ASLEF_Scotland ASLEFunion RMTunion

Brexit benefits promoted by right wing media… BrexitHasFailed BrexitBrokeBritain BrexitToBlameForInflation

finbarfin

Nothing bud greedy profiteering. These companies should be ashamed of themselves. It’s utterly disgusting what they’re charging at the tills. Sadly though, folk have no we’re else to go. There’s simply no competition anymore. Shameful greed Corruption

Prices have risen, quality decreased, pack sizes shrank and unavailability of produce is palpable. Please don’t try to tell untruths.

Profiteering.

Ah those sunlight uplands of cheaper food and clothes promised by Jacob Rees Mogg !! Oh no he was lying

See also Brexit cc niamhielynch

Supermarket rip off !!!!

Brexiteers eating sovereignty

Cause ..the 3 f's. Feed, fertiliser and fuel.

Assuming the reason your running this on own brands for the supermarkets is becasue the “premium brands” have all been taking the absolute piss for the last 12 months.

17.2%? Times that by 2 and you will be nearer the real inflation figure.

It feels more like 75% in my pocket. Not just the prices that have risen, but the quality that have dropped.

Profit and greed are rampant in the supermarkets. The gov stand by and do nothing as it’s their pals profiting and laughing all the way to the bank. Suppliers are being made bankrupt or simply stop supplying.

No chance, my weekly shop is minimum 25% more!

The offer to nurses was 'fair and reasonable' was it SteveBarclay RishiSunak theRCN

Good ole Brexit

What did it matter. According to the media, most people go shopping at food banks now. Free stuff for the feckless.

Its these supermarkets ripping people off, profiteering

Profiteering

But absolutely definitely don’t ask for a pay rise workers

And you wander why everyone is on strike for higher wages, just to make ends meet.

Brexit Fueled UK Food Price Surge, Says BOE Rate-Setter

Yeah greedy workers, now put up shut up accept your measley increase and few grand backhander 🙄

But the working person is greedy for wanting a pay rise according to some

We know, doesn’t take posting this to let people know.

Why? They can be produced in the UK so why the rip off prices

Brexit just keeps taketh away from you all soon to be bankrupt now ulez nobody can get to work anymore folks fleeing london the murder capital of the world 🌎 ffs 🤦‍♀️
