A study in the British Medical Journal says many infant formulas that say they'll help develop a baby's brain, eyes or nervous system aren't substantiated.

Manufacturers of infant formula often boast that their products will help foster a baby’s development. Abbott ABT says of its Similac Pro-Advance formula that it’s “designed to support both immune and cognitive development with key ingredients found in breast milk,” while Reckitt UK:RKT says its Enfamil formula is the “#1 trusted brand for brain-building nutrition and immune support.”

“We have identified a high prevalence of claims…that seem to have little or no scientific substantiation,” the study says. This is hardly the first time that claims made by manufacturers of infant formula have come into question. And that’s on top of issues that manufacturers faced during last year’s formula shortage.

The BMJ study didn’t cite which specific manufacturers made the claims. But that was intentional, according to Dr. Daniel Munblit, one of the lead researchers.

States confront medical debt that's bankrupting millionsLawmakers in over a dozen states and the U.S. Congress are tackling medical debt, which has become a leading cause of personal bankruptcy. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports an estimated 100 million Americans have amassed nearly $200 billion in collective medical debt — almost the size of Greece’s economy. The financial burden has pushed millions of Americans into financial uncertainty. The flurry of bills — in states including Colorado, New York and Florida — would create medical debt relief programs, protect certain personal property from collections, lower interest rates or keep medical debt from tanking credit scores. Or, we could just do what every other country does… 🙄 And how are they doing this? Why is the government using our money to bail out everything? Whether it's big corporations, students, or ppp loans, let's stop bailing out everyone! If only there was a solution that would let everyone have healthcare and decimate a parasitic insurance industry that siphons wealth while limiting care.
