The antidiabetic drug Ozempic has been called 'the worst-kept secret in Hollywood.' It causes rapid weight loss — and celebs have scrambled to get their hands on it for off-label, aesthetic purposes. But its popularity has a price.

Her doctor suggested she try Ozempic to bring down her blood sugar and also help her lose weight and avoid another stroke."You actually forget to eat"

"You are not hungry," she says."Like, I actually have to set timers to make sure that I do eat, because otherwise you actually forget to eat." "That was hard," says Carter-Williams."I mean, I wasn't using it to try and fit into my Oscar dress. I really needed it for my health. But I went a while without getting it."Dr. Jorge Rodriguez is a gastroenterologist in LA. He knew of Ozempic for diabetes treatment, but up until about a year ago had never heard of it being used for weight loss.

"I won't prescribe it for weight loss," he says."Using it in any other way restricts and harms the people that really benefit from it, which are the diabetics."

Rapid weight loss sounds healthy

Change your diet and start eating a plant based diet. You won't need the drugs. You will get healthy and lose weight. But that's too hard I guess. Pills are so much better for you. 🙄

Aesthetics is naive take. Reduction in obesity related illness is a more realsitic appraisal of its benefit for the a erage user.

I think a great way to fight diabetes is to prevent ppl from becoming diabetic in the first place. If it is to be used for weight loss, it should be saved for pre- diabetic ppl who need to lose greater than 50 pounds, and meet certain parameters in their labs.

Are you guys drug salesman now?

Looks like its doing wonders for that fat heifer pictured.

That’s how the shortage was created!

I hope that's not what Lisa Marie Presley was on. 😢😐🤫

As a diabetic it has been impossible to find my dosage. My doc had to prescribe a higher dosage so that I could find it. Thanks to all the docs prescribing it off label. All diabetics thank you NOT

Which hurts diabetics who need the drug for that purpose

I would never take any kind of a drug that claims to help lose weight because I remember the 70s when people were taking all those speed like pills and a lot of them died. Just put the fork down and get up and walk around!!!!

Don't promote these drugs!!!

This is poor health journalism. Ozempic is literally a medicine for diabetes. If you use it and don’t have diabetes you will ruin your pancreas and you will become insulin resistant thus actually needing insulin. Please stop causing entire populations harm.

Sad for the people that actually need it 😿

Weight loss is a side effect and not everyone loses weight. I’m on it for diabetes. I’ve lost a little bit of weight but not a ton. The other side effects also suck.

Pretty obvious this will lead to more shortages and higher prices for the diabetics who really need it.

I wish people would stop using it for off-label fad weight loss so diabetics in the US can have access to it again.

Being a former diabetic I can say; Wait until the side effects become more prevalent. Oh it's coming. Rich Girl by Hall & Oates....

Canada wants this not leaving their country when purchased in Canada. How much are the Americans getting screwed on by purchasing here in the states. Such BS!

... If she goes to the gym, all her health problems will go away. But everyone wants a short cut

People are more focused on their own vanity than the health of their community members. No surprise there.

Hollywood is gross

Ayesha Rascoe's poor English on weekend edition helps NPR how? I am sure all the black people will donate to NPR filling in the 10 million dollar void that results in 1000 layoffs.

I am scratching my head how having a black american woman using ebonics or poor english announcing the NPR weekend edition news helps NPR. Expanding the NPR demographic to black people that have no money helps NPR how, other than further pushing it into bankruptcy.

There are bound to be unforseen tragedies ahead.

I want itttttttt

Your credibility has sunk so low that you peddling meds?

Off label prescribing this medication is acceptable by the FDA and left wingers, but other well known life saving medications with very safe track records that have been around for decades are not. Interesting.

I wonder if this drug could be helpful for those with PCOS?

If non-obese people want to pay full price for it, I have no problem. Insurance does often cover it (in its 'wegovy' injectable form) for severe and chronic obesity. For diabetes and obesity it truly is a lifesaving drug, and the company deserves it's profits.

Infuriating that a drug that has been a miracle for me as a diabetic is becoming harder to get because some rich housewife wants to fit into a size zero rather than her normal size two.

look up Ozempicface

Put this shit in the water like fluoride and make America hot again.

It also takes the drug away from those who really need it.

Is this a native ad?

🤮😁😂🤣🤡

Why isn’t Lizzo on board ?

I look forward to listening to the MaintenancePod episode on this in a year

Side effects: Slapping Oscar hosts, getting Netflix deals, starring in a movie-adaptation franchise based on a comic book and/or young teen novel. Also, appearance on DWTS.

What about the old fashion way of losing weight? Putting the damn fork down.

So obesity isn’t genetics and is controllable? Is this a news story that’s changing the narrative or a advertisement, who knows but for sure npr is garbage

Another story about how the wealthy and privileged ruin things for others. I wish we would finally do something about these inequities.

It’s interesting that Hollywood, who can get any help they need, would take something valuable from people who don’t have many other options, if any. Anyway, look up glucosegoddesss on Instagram. She’s been helping thousands with no ozempic needed.

It’s sad that folks that need that, can’t get it thanks to the Hollywood crowd that can afford the price. I was told 1 months dose was $1,200 out of pocket at the pharmacy. I go without.

Side effects? Anal bleeding, suicidal thoughts?

I like a little meat on the bones

Phentermine is cheaper
