Western Australia Firefighter David Broadbent who has suffered from Thyroid cancer since 2008 says it is “morally and ethically the right thing” for governments to give firefighters the “maximum level of protection” as cancer is not covered for them.

“I’m very grateful I’m still able to serve as a firefighter now – I came very close to resigning from the job, it was a very difficult time, just for myself and my young family, thankfully I did at the time have a very supportive manager,” he told Sky News Australia. “Worrying about things like how much sick leave you have left, worrying about how you are going to pay for treatment, all those sorts of things are burdens that sit on your shoulders when you don’t have that worker’s compensation protection.”
