Beloved broadcaster Charlie Bird has shared an update on his health, as the former Chief News Correspondent with RTÉ News and Current Affairs says, one year on from his Croke Patrick climb, he would be unable to do the same climb today.
The fundraiser was launched after Charlie spoke openly and honestly about his diagnosis with motor neurone disease on The Late Late Show with Ryan Tubridy.Charlie, who communicates using voice technology, told the Irish Examiner that "yes," his "health has diminished."The former news reporter explained that he has almost lost all power in his left arm and hand, and that he is concerned about his illness spreading to his limbs.
Charlie is constantly working with various causes, and will lead a special Hand of Friendship Walk in aid of the Samaritans in Wicklow next month. The Charlie Bird Hand of Friendship Walk with Samaritans is supported by Coillte. Avondale Forest Park and other Coillte sites across Ireland will be open for 5km and 1km walks, so that others across the country may also take part.
