Luxturna is a groundbreaking new drug that’s a one-time treatment to restore sight. The CEO says the $850,000 price tag is based on what juries have awarded someone who’s been blinded, but an independent watchdog group calls the drug overpriced.

Interview with Spark CEO Marrazzo on Gene Therapy Pricing & Paving the Way for the Field.

Thievery

This treatment would be for the rich only.

Which health plan would pay for this?

This is not preposterous and ridiculous.

When Stevie Wonder gets is, let me know.

Shame, imagine if the guy that discovered polio vaccine, or antibiotics did something like that? Dies human decency has to be written into law. That is not capitalism, that's disgusting

real_farmacist Overpriced? You think!

BIG PHARMA in action. RIP off insurance and the suffering consumer!!

$850,000 for a drug the treats a specific kind of blindness that only effects between 1,000 - 2,000 people in the US. Trying to make a fortune of the disabled instead of helping them. Typical big pharma BS.

Obscene!

sgw94 That's ok. We'll just go to Canada and Mexico and get it cheaper. Sorry. Not shopping American on that one.

So if we set drug prices based on jury awarded damages then any drug that is life saving should retail for the value of a lost loved one? Just because you hold the title CEO doesn’t make you smart.

American greed

HOW DO THEY EXPECT TO SELL IT

Isn’t Capitalism awesome in the health care system everyone loves it.

So removing a bullet should cost whatever juries award to victims of getting shot?

Hopefully is can be duplicated elsewhere for pennies on the dollar. Screw the patent not the patient.

Both of my sons and my mother have retinitis pigmentosa. I pray that they will be able to have this treatment!

What good do medical breakthroughs do for society if only a few can afford them?

For the good of mankind. Nah, it’s all about the $$$

So we have to literally pay the same price as a company sued for malpractice? Is this a Trump math formula?

Extortion.

These people invented a drug that can give people the gift of sight and the first thing you do is complain about the price. This didn't exist a year ago: no price would have let these people see. It's amazing

Imagine if Black Jesus charged $850k to heal the blind.

I saw you streamed 8 hours of the Women's marches today, which had a few thousand marchers. I couldn't find a link to your coverage of the March for Life that had more than 100,000 marchers. Could you point me to a link of your live coverage of that event? Thanks.

American greed meet innovation

Freaking sad!

DGlaucomflecken interested in your take on this..

Why should a drug’s price be based on a judicial penalty anyway ?

People can die from the stupidity of the price....

Why not give it away and be a hero? Charge $850,000 and be a zero.

More diversion from NBC after the BUZZFEED debacle and President Trump offer on immigration puts the responsibility for the Government Shutdown SQUARELY on the shoulders of Schumer and Pelosi

Well no blind is Rich

Stupid drug companies!! Is the devil working there?!😕 Is the devil more good hearted than drug companies?!😕

Who the hell can afford $850,000?!?

FDA clears the way to increase access and lower cost of life-saving opioid overdose treatment drugThe FDA's change clears the way for drugmakers to sell naloxone without a prescription. The life-saving treatment for opioids is also known as Narcan and Evzio. Let me see if I understand. A life-saving drug is only available by prescription because it's label is too complicated?!? And changing said label will allow for OTC and lower costs? Lives are being lost due to a label? This is fairly misleading angelicalavito - You forgot to mention in your article that the auto-injectable and the nasal spray that the FDA wrote these labels for are both under patent unless the companies that own these patents want OTC. So there's that 'small' barrier.
