A bipartisan group of senators wants to make daylight saving time permanent. But sleep experts say standard time is better, because it saves morning light and is more in sync with our natural rhythms.

"Human circadian rhythms are very closely linked to the rising and setting of the sun," explainsAnd she says our internal clock is not as well aligned during daylight saving time."Light in the morning is very important," she says."Restoring permanent, year-round standard time is the best option for our health and well-being," Martin says.

Martin treats patients with sleep problems."When I work with folks who have insomnia, we work very hard to have a consistent time to get up in the morning. And that is much easier when it's light in the morning," Martin explains.a neurologist and sleep medicine specialist in Los Angeles. "The natural daily cycle of light and darkness," he says,"is really the most powerful timing cue that we have to synchronize our body clock.

Daylight saving time increases evening exposure to light, Navab explains, which can make it harder to fall asleep at night. He plans to travel to Capitol Hill in April with the advocacy committee for the American Academy for Sleep Medicine to oppose

The time need not change during summer or winter. Alternate is to change the hours of work depending upon its winter or summer. This way only relevant population will be addressed. It wouldn’t also be a burden on the state to manage another aspect of time.

The alternative is either to have the sun rise before 5 am in the Summer, or after 8 am in the Winter. We have ~15 hours of sun in the Summer, as opposed to ~9.5 hours of sun in the Winter. It makes sense to add more of the extra 5.5 hours to the evening.

Live in Korea where dsl doesn’t exist

Daylight savings is racist

If the risk was great - nobody would travel.

People have to wait until the temp goes down to the 90s or low 100s at sunset, 9pm to cool off/ go for walk? The evening won't start until late. Kids won't go to bed. And how to get up early for the next day? Save us all the stress. Make Standard time all year Pleeeeaaaase. 🙏

Also a major business cost: the amount of development time spent fixing bugs related to time issues and browser quirks is practically a pillar of the economy!

Sorry, I don’t need it to be light at 4am in the summer. Thanks for your expert opinions though, sleep doctors.

Yeah, I'm not gonna trust doctors with time until they demonstrate they know how clocks work and start appointments on time.

Why not just do 1/2 hour permanent change? Problem solved.

I work 3rd shift and sleep two different schedules. I’m guessing folks can handle two time changes a year.

I’ll only accept that if New England switches to the Atlantic Time Zone. Serious though - it’s been this way for over 100 years and we’ve all survived. Some states want Standard Time, others DST. Accept the compromise and move on. The yearly kvetching is tiresome.

Snore. Same story repeated 100x by 5000 news outlets in the last year. We will be fine either way. Somehow Alaskans survive on 2 hours of daylight in the winter and 22 hours in the summer. Daylight hours are all over the board in the United States. Humans were made to adapt.

Loura_Stories Yes please! Regular time is best. But for god’s sake just pick one and STOP the changing!

Agreed.

Every New Englander I know gets more depressed, tired and unmotivated when we set the time back in the fall. It cuts our days too short and it's dark at 4 pm! Please leave it at daylight savings!

It doesn’t matter. The disruption is whats torture. FFS! split the difference!

ATTN: SenWhitehouse

We can’t even get one little simple thing right.

Amen

Neurologist doesn't realize that time is just a number? Start times for school and work can be adjusted as needed. Let's come together, or we will be changing clocks forever.

Absolutely not. The ridiculous idea that it is a good idea to have the sun come up 4 hours before we do is not based on science and I refuse to believe there's any good data that it is good to have crows squawking at 3 in the morning out the window, and waking up to a heat wave.

Great. Now that what's half way done isn't perfect, nothing will get done.

I vote for standard time.

Split the difference. Move it 30 minutes and leave it.

We’re a society in dire need of more rest and sleep, not less.

Toughen up buttercups.

I am not a morning person so I always have issues waking up when the alarm goes off in the morning. When we spring forward 1 hour, it is really really hard. I'm at my brightest and sharpest as the night falls and I don't have any issues staying awake till 3 or 4am.

Because 4:00am is too early for sunrise in June, and 10:00am is too late in December.

Why not just spring ahead a half hour, and then in the fall just do nothing, and then we all live happily ever after

We should just go back to sun dials.

What is a no? Stupid government doesn't even have TermLimits !!!! Nothing will ever change and I'll just get worse and worse and worse and worse and worse and worse and worse and worse and worse and worse

Permanent Standard Time is best. Morning sunlight is important for mental health and late evening light disturbs sleep and circadian rhythms. Permanent Daylight Saving Time is living 1 hr off natural sun time & would be permanent sleep disruption.

I don’t care which one they pick. Just pick one and stick with it for the love of all that is holy and unholy

Are we really surprised that the Senate is trying to do this backwards? They suit

Numbers are arbitrary. Just stop changing them please. Life will adjust either way.

More light after work please.

Sun rises/sun sets. Get used it

Kaity Raddes is an explicit Antifa supporter.

What are you guys at NPR talking about? That first paragraph is redundant. Doctors agree we should stop the time change and avoid making daylight saving time permanent. That’s pretty much saying the same thing.

Standard time is best. Why do people insist on denying nature?

What are doctors from extreme north and south regions of the world saying? How does the sleep cycle work in areas where there is 24hrs of light or dark during certain times of year? I utilized artificial light and curtains north of Arctic circle myself

Sorry, I live in NorCal. I love the light until 8 or 9 PM in the summer.

Good call. Standard time year round. Where I live it wouldn't be daylight until 9:30 am in Dec/Jan. on year round daylight time. No thanks.

Everything is a hazard now a days, society is soft, mushy, pulp. No spine

I agree. It should be the other way around.

Standard time is the “natural” one. Let’s keep it permanent.

F joe biden!

I don't care which...just pick 1 and end this.

This is true! Standard time is, well, standard! Make that permanent.

It is the wrong way because we don't want or need dark winters. It's already cold in a lot of places & it can cause depression to build in people who may not otherwise struggle with it & are unprepared to cope with it. We need to skip it starting this Fall imo.

The arguments against permanent DST rely on confusing the issue. The uptick in accidents and health issues are predominately ratted to the change forward and back, not the time zone itself, so those objections should be jettisoned entirely as irrelevant. 1/

Agreed! Nothing natural about getting up in the morning when it’s pitch black outside. I hate it!

Are people unclear on the reality of latitude?

I don't care if it's permanently standard time or daylight savings time just stop make us change our clocks.

I'm finding this whole life experience a life hazard.

Here's an idea... Split to difference, pull back 30 minutes in the fall, and call it a day. And the entire argument by doctors presumes were locked into stupid timekeeping system, rather than the rotation of the earth... The earth doesn't care what time they think it is.

Why not keep the clocks the same, and change the hours of work and school, but in two half-hour changes, one around now, and another in May or so (then back again).

No it isn't better. PEOPLE will tell you they feel better with the hour forward but i am sure there is a reason standard time is being pushed on us.

Keep changing it. Personally I love the little boost of serotonin when we near the warmer seasons.

More Daylight! Permanently

YES!! Standard Time!!

Like cares about anyone...

Retail giants are infusing massive $$ into lobbying Congress to keep DST because they want ppl to shop and more ppl shop when it’s daylight. As usual, health concerns are taking second fiddle to the mighty dollars of corporate interests. Keep standard time permanent.

People are you really telling me you cant handle this twice a year? You know damn well and good at least once a WEEK you’re sleeping in longer or getting up earlier. Who really cares?

If changing clocks is such a health hazard how can people possibly travel to a different tine zone without many getting sick or dying. This is nonsense.

Just hurry up and make this madness stop

I don’t care what time they pick, but there should be a stop to these crazy time shifts twice a year. This is bad for everyone.

Daylight savings time works better for my natural rhythms.

Agreed! Standard Time is preferable! ⏰ cc RepCardenas Tcardenas AlexPadilla4CA RepAdamSchiff

just stop the clock change every six months and everyone and their uncle will be pleased. Either way just stop the silly clock moves. N&N

Once again…..hack politicians ignore science and the experts.

Yes, standard time.

Take a nap.

Agree with the sleep experts on this one. At this point I’ll take either one to just leave it alone

Could we compromise/split difference - make DST 1/2 hour and keep permanent?

The real issue is being stuck inside 6-7 months of the year and it getting dark at 3:45 pm for a month during the coldest month. Boston SeasonalDepression

These So called “ experts “ don’t get it . It’s the switch back and Forth that causes all the problems . Pick one and adjust accordingly .

Sorry folks, longer working hours and kids in factories is going to be the new bipartisan reality

Why are people complaining. Just leave everything the way it is. I actually like the idea of springing forward and back twice a year.

What about flying to a different time zone?

Standard time has always felt more natural to me. Could it be that the people who study it are right.....? Imagine that.

Yes. Finally someone reporting on the bed for STANDARD time not Daylight Savings Time.

Moi, to “sleep experts:”

The “experts” also told us that the vaccines worked, that this was a pandemic of the unvaccinated, and that masks prevent the transmission of the virus but you better get vaccinated or lose your job. No thank you, we want permanent DST.

There is no solution that won’t infuriate one side or the other.

Not sure how the sleep experts can talk in such generalities when it depends on where in the time zone you live (East-West) when the sun comes up. Time zones are vertical, sunrise times diagonal.

NO ONE CARES. JUST PICK A TIME AND STICK WITH IT.

I wonder if they should also consider updating the time zones. Right now, they are not consistent in width. It would help with the people who live on the edges of the zones to have more accurate times relative to the light.

Either way, can we please stop having to change our clocks once and for all?

what the f ever just change it you gd useless fing government clowns.

Standard time=better body rhythms

Stopped paying attention to 'experts' a few years ago...

I don't really care either way, just pick one or the other. This changing every 6 months is definitely not healthy!

Changing our clocks is a health hazard : No its not, at worse it's a minor inconvenience.

Changing our clocks is a health hazard: no its not.

I know it would confuse most Americans, but why not just split the difference and fall back 30 minutes in the fall and call it quits?

Ridiculous, seriously

Adjust the clock a half hour and leave the damned thing alone.

I don’t mind the twice a year adjustment tbh 🤷‍♂️ every year people make a big deal about it around the change but then stop talking about it.

Well, I guess we need to actually be in sync with Arizona since they don't do time changes.

Simple compromise solution, split the difference - change the clocks by 30min next time & then never again.

So since we can't decide between standard time (healthier) and savings time (popular) we'll keep switching back and forth between them (worst option).

SleepAndSports

The Nixon admin tried this for one year and one year only. When they started a poll found 77% supported it. After one year 44% did. We never learn from history

I agree. I have always operated better on standard time, and am usually off kilter during daylight savings time.

Yes!!! Please give us morning light!!!

One thing I hate about living on the eastern edge of a time zone is the sun rising at 4:50 in June. I sure as hell don’t want to turn that into 3:50. Rather have the sunlight in the evening. DSTforever

Most people don't care which one it is; just stop the 2x-annual changes.

Waaaaah, why did God even make me? Why can't everything be perfect for the Slave Mentality?

DST in the winter, sun rise around 9am. Or ST in the summer sun rise at 4am... at least in the northern part of the US...

This should probably be a state issue given how wildly the 'ideal' timezone would vary geographically, I really really do not want permanent standard time in California. That would absolutely suck, I don't need a useless 4:45am sunrise in the summer...

Why not split the difference? Less drastic all around.

Intense heat waves do not make me eager for another hour of daylight.

If it helps not make it pitch dark in winter at 430 walking out of work. I’m for it

It's all arbitrary I say let's pick one a stick to it.

This was already tried. It failed. Will we as a species ever learn from our mistakes? That was a rhetorical question.

Permanent DST was tried in the USA in 1973. Repealed after 8 months.

Pick one or the other. I don't care which.

Oh no! Don't expect senators to rely on facts and science. That is not who owns and pays senators.

That doesn't make any sense, supposed sleep experts. Things can be adjusted (like school/work start times). The issue is jumping back and forth twice a year.

Lost me at 'sleep experts'😂😂😂🤡

THEN IT'S A BIGGER HEALTH HAZARD SWITCHING TIMES TWICE A YEAR!

Yes, let’s keep standard time if going to stop switching

I thought this already happened last year.
