The FDA will now require mammogram facilities to inform women if they have dense breast tissue in a major effort to improve breast cancer prevention.

March 9, 2023, 2:22 PMprevention, the FDA will now require mammogram facilities to inform women if they have dense breast tissue.

About half of women have dense breast tissue, and many don't know it. Doctors say having dense breast tissue does not pose an immediate threat to health, but it does increase breast cancer risk. "Dense breast tissue is a common finding on mammograms, especially in younger women," said Dr. Hal Burstein, a breast oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

"It does not mean that a woman has breast cancer," Burstein said. "It means she might be at slightly greater risk of breast cancer, and that the mammogram is slightly less helpful for early detection."Medical guidelines suggest most women should start getting regular mammograms starting at age 50, or even earlier depending on additional risk factors.

Previously, more than half of states had this requirement, according to the FDA's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hilary Marston. Now, it will be a nationwide requirement, and facilities have 18 months to comply. In this undated file photo, a woman gets a mammogram.

What’s the point of telling them and not doing the appropriate test for the dense tissue 🙄

allex_sus I was just advised of this yesterday and I have to go for additional screening.

The good ones already do. This is not a newsflash.

Notifications, and help understanding and how to proceed!!

If it is a stand alone directive, this seems like common sense. Tragically, we've learned we have to read the fine print because everything out of DC is misleading & filled with pork, unrelated directives and expense.

What will they do with women of the year who happen to be men?

Meanwhile women are dying because of republican laws that are so ambiguous that doctors fear legal ramifications if they save the woman Stop with this bs Why aren’t you talking about women being sent home to die or women forced to carry a dead fetus

Just telling women isn’t going to do anything if they aren’t going to do anything with the info. Are insurance companies going to pay for extra screening?

I would have thought to be done already…😮 …. It’s not already in effect. Sad all the lives lost… now you decide…. FDA….

They already tell you this!

How about we lower the age to get it done 🤷🏻🤷🏻🤷🏻

A great reason to require insurance to cover genetic testing!

The FDA doesn’t mean shit!!!!!!

They always have.

aboutKP Kaiser’s been telling me I have dense breasts for years, but when I asked for an MRI or an ultrasound,( I’m ugh risk) they say oh well we didn’t feel anything on examination you’re not going to have an MRI or an ultrasound! What good is it if your not gonna step up?!

About time! Or just a slow news day. Cousin ran into this. Never told to get 3d scans or ultrasounds.

They’ve always informed me of my dense breasts, but that’s all they do, is tell me. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I was told at 14 that I had dense breasts, to always do monthly self breast exams, and that info saved my life. I was DX at 31 w/ Stage 3 Breast Cancer - because I found my lump through a self breast exam.

mcroke

Sooo.. Were they required to tell them before? I’m confused.

They already do!

This is not new. I've been told this for years, as has my mother who developed breast cancer. She detected her lump one month after her yearly mammogram through a self check. So we don't trust tests. Women, learn your body. If something feels off, get checked out asap!

How about just providing the appropriate diagnostic tools necessary? How much more expensive can it be?

Must be all those third world doctors that keep coming here

We have to make doctors do their job?

That's fine, but ALSO tell them because of their dense breast tissue they need to schedule additional screening... An ultrasound would have caught my BC earlier.

Florida already does this. So glad the rest of the country is catching on.

My friend's mom died due to this very issue. Regularly scheduled mammograms and still no detection until it was too late. RIP Deb Link.

I wasn’t informed

I have only had one doctor tell me to have a mammogram due to dense tissue, all the others never seemed to be alarmed.

I also have to get MRI's on top of mammograms and ultrasounds as well.... Also not covered by insurance (or not well covered)..... Currently making payments 🙄

I've been getting the ultrasounds with my mammograms every time because of my dense breast tissue. I've also been getting mammograms since before 40 due to having found painful lumps and having family history. Ins always paid, until this past year. Turns out it's employer choice.

The Akward moment when I got a MRI last year, because I have dense breast. I thought it was a standard procedure, now find out it's wasn't a standard procedure. 🤔

Can they improve the mammogram process. I'm sick of getting my itis ashed between two steel plates.

I’ve been told I have dense tissue but didn’t know I should get an MRI. No one has said ants out that…

How can I block ABC/View news

A little toooo late, for many Cancer Patients… sad.!!

Now if they could only come up with a better way to do mammograms, those machines turn us into pancakes

I had an MRI and was referred then for Ultrasound due to MRI result Told repeat MRI in 6 months (that is a month before next mammogram due )Supposed to do MRI 6 months after mammogram In theory next MRI not due until one year from last one

Why wouldn’t they be telling everyone? That’s crazy. But, unfortunately, the additional testing like breast ultrasound isn’t covered by insurance and very expensive. They are routine procedures with people with dense breasts so they should be covered like mammograms.

Let’s talk about why insurance does not cover the full cost of additional untrasounds/imaging that is always NEEDED when you have dense tissue.

Massachusetts has been doing this for years. Glad to see everyone is onboard.

Every single mammogram done should be 3D. It's criminal to still be doing 2D screening mammograms.

'Now'? Jesus. We have been doing this in Canada for 30+ years.

I am already told by my provider for several years noe.

They already do this when you have a mammogram done.

So what, you then know and still can't afford the MRI they reccomend that insurance doesn't cover! 5,000$ is the price for a breast MRI and it is reccomend YEARLY!

Tell your doctor/insurance spot is sensitive to the touch, if family history the doctor should recommend a mri and hopefully your insurance will pay for it. My dr told me to use these exact words and my insurance covered. Saved my life bc mammogram didn’t pick up anything 🙏🏻

How is this new? I’ve been told I have dense breast for 10 years and counting now 🤨🤔

What is a women thought? Because men can get pregnant and all that now so what's up? Not very lgbtq+xyz friendly

Are they also required to explain what that means and why it's a risk factor? Female medicine in the US is a joke healthcare women

I was told this at my first mammogram. I get them annually as well an ultrasound.

Informing them doesn’t help at all. Make 3D Imaging mandatory for women with dense breast tissue. My mother had three mammograms that came up normal, kept telling her doc she had something there, finally to appease her they gave her an ultrasound and voila- there was the cancer.

They already tell you., Would be stupid if they didn’t.. 🤔

If they really wanted to help they’d make insurance companies cover the ultrasound that we require w every mammogram. I pay $600 a year for my screening.

Yes he should

Not all facilities inform women.

Now if only they would make health insurance companies pay for all of the follow up too, that would be great.

I have always been informed of my density you can’t get a clear X-ray

This isn’t already happening everywhere I always have to get a follow-up ultrasound

Not new at all and most women already know but getting insurance to pay for additional testing or doctors to push for that testing is a whole different story. Getting the age requirement for mamograms moved up and genetic testing added would be something. We will see.

Mine has for years

They already do its insurance companies that refuse to pay automatically for a breast ultrasound instead of a regular mammogram. They would rather put women through 2 procedures and cost the patient more. Forget the pain part no one cares about that part for women's health.

My doctorS have already been doing this with me for decades.

This isn't new

I do the mammogram and the ultrasound the same day.

They already tell you that in the mammogram report. What actually is ridiculous is the guidelines of not doing mammograms until 50! Both mom and I have breast cancer much before 50 (we are not blood related)

They already do that. I have 2 mammograms every year because I have dense tissue. I was diagnosed 2 years ago with stage 1 breast cancer. If anything women need to go every year to have a mammogram done.

I think the one I use already informs me of this

FDA is just getting to this? Definitely lagging in prevention efforts. MRIs should be a standard part of prevention /screening for those with dense tissue. That would be major. For me, 3d and ultrasound could not identify cancer that mri picked up.

So if you find a lump the mammogram didn’t it’s your fault for having dense tissue?

Don’t they already?

Was told through mail I had dense tissue, no follow up or told what’s next or meaning

This mean’s absolutely zero. Breast cancer still comes back as Stage 4 in 30% of patients with “cured” early stage. It doesn’t help save anyone’s lives. Someone needs to start calling this crap out.

They already do tell you. That’s why I have to have breast MRIs instead of or in addition to mammograms.

Why not just do a diagnostic mammogram for those women?

how does this prevent breast cancer?

It would be great it we could get enhanced mammograms that don’t cost more,

and men?

FDA sets national mammogram standards to protect women with dense breastsMammogram providers will be required to inform women with dense breast tissue that their cancer screenings may be difficult to interpret and recommend consulting their doctors about the need for additional tests, the Food and Drug Administration announced. Yet insurance companies are not required to cover the necessary extra screenings to ensure that a woman with dense breast tissue has a clean bill of health.
