People with disabilities in the criminal justice system feel like they exist in a "black hole" after an international torture prevention body cancelled a visit to Australia.A UN body cancelled a visit to Australia after the NSW and Queensland governments denied full access to places of detention
It followed the decision by the SPT last October to suspend a 12-day visit to Australia, mid-way through the trip, after inspectors were denied access to several detention facilities.cancelled because the New South Wales and Queensland governments would not provide "unrestricted access" to their detention settings.
Ms Levitt said the experience of juveniles in facilities like Western Australia's Banksia Hill Detention Centre,"They should be banging down the door to get in there," she said. "People with disability and mental health disorders are detained in places where there are egregious human rights abuses such as arbitrary detention and cruel and degrading treatment," Mr McGee said.
Diabolical for a few. Don't commit crime.
Had they had come, they'd be risking lockup in an immigration detention camp and torutured !! LOL
Unbelievable rubbish from the ABC again
I still fondly recall when the human rights investigation into Australia was cancelled due to one of the investigation countries having issues at home. So without Libya attending, the visit got canned. Libya. Leading a team into torture. Looking to see if we were doing it right?
Appalling!
As a taxpayer I really appreciate working hard all day to know that I am a funding an organisation that is actively dividing and undermining my country.
If the corrupt hate mongering UN is unhappy with us, then we must be doing something right.
Maybe now they will have time to visit the 'QAnon shaman', falsely imprisoned in Washington.
Any word on the UN anti torture trips to Iran, North Korea, China etc, etc?
oh how the abc hates our country how they love self loathing! the ABC is the political equivalent of self harm...
The ABC hates Australia but loves trying to convince the world we are horrible people.
Of course, most of these 'disabled' ones are Aboriginal. Who is surprised?
