Treating diseases like cancer, diabetes and inflammation with herbal medicines may soon be within reach based on the program being developed at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
The P65.78-million program is being supported by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, said a DOST-PCHRD news release. “It is one of the most important stages of drug discovery and development as it determines the characteristics of all the active substances and pharmaceutical ingredients to be used in designing and formulating a dosage form which may be derived from pre-formulation studies, standardization and metabolite profiling,” the DOST-PCHRD said.
PCHRD Executive Director Dr. Jaime Montoya highlighted the importance of herbal medicine development.
