‘When there's a big disparity in pay — is 50% of dinner, mortgage, medical bills, vacation, utilities and other shared expenses justified?’

Dear Quentin, I read one of your recent letters from a public-school teacher whose boyfriend wanted half the cost of a vacation when they broke up. He works on Wall Street.

This brought to mind my ex demanding that I pay half of our daughter’s uncovered medical bill. He was making about three times what I do. I know now that money should be a frank and practical discussion in any situation, but I’m wondering what your take is on this.Dear Rebecca, There’s rarely such a thing as “fair” in a breakup, especially when it comes to finances.

Katie Carter, a divorce attorney with the Hofheimer Family Law Firm in Virginia, has opinions on this issue: “In lots of agreements, I find that opposing counsel will try to include that the parties will split the unreimbursed medical expenses 50/50,” she writes. “But that’s not the law. The law says that the parties will split unreimbursed medical expenses pro rata – that is, proportionally, based on their incomes.

Yup !!!!!!

Yes its fair... you have a choice and choices as to who you work for & how many hours. Whether you get more education or a higher paying job. You also had a choice and decided on kids. No do your share. 50% . Stop trying to justify why someone else should take your responsibility

Boycott Tesla

Fair

If he makes 3xs more he should have her on his medical insurance. I might see a paralegal.

When you contributed 50% to the daughters DNA, it’s only fair that you also contribute 50% to the costs involved! As for the ex earning 3x your salary, you should try harder and earn more like your ex then!

Yes. Thanks for asking. Your daughter will know.

Why are they your ex-partner? If he was physically cheating and or physically harming you, perhaps he owes 100%. If you left because he wasn't being 'fair' to you...well now's your chance to enjoy fairness and pay 50%.

Totally fair, it's gender equality

The court usually decides on such issues to avoid such confrontations between exes.

I have an obnoxious divorced female neighbor. She looks in my windows. She is continually looking for my attention. I've investigated getting a restraining order against her. She doesn't know much about me because I've never been interested in having anything to do with her.…
