Old laboratory equipment that constantly break down have resulted in a backlog of 35 776 tests at the Forensic Chemistry Laboratories in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Phaahla said 11 948 tests were taken between one and five years, while 3391 tests were taken between five and eight years and 2158 were taken between eight and nine years. These numbers were added to the recent tests that increased the backlog to over 35 000. He added the backlog was also caused by the nature of the samples that must be tested, the volume of new samples and a high incidence of urgent requests.
The laboratories have now been transferred from the department of health to the National Health Laboratory Service given their efficiency as a specialised laboratory service. NHLS is leveraging its resources and expertise to turn things around and strive to address the backlog.
A detective told me itβs about two years before they usually get answers.
