JOHANNESBURG - More than two months after the Boksburg explosion, some of the families whose homes were damaged said they had still not received any assistance to rebuild their houses.
The homes were severely damaged when a gas tanker exploded under a railway bridge near the OR Tambo Memorial Hospital on Christmas eve last year. The explosion killed 41 people, including 12 healthcare workers. The pensioner said she tried pleading with the City of Ekurhuleni for help to rebuild her living room but was told it can't help because hers is a private property.
"I've just got a small pension and I have used all my savings, so I am only able to pay for that room and that room, but now there are extra damages," said Zwanziger.Zwanziger said she could not afford the repairs to her home, which were estimated to cost at least R300, 000. Eyewitness News tried reaching out to the provincial government, but our attempts proved unsuccessful.
