He was lifted after receiving formal complaints over alleged fraud which occurred in 2021 and 2022.

The man, who was questioned by gardai about the alleged fraud before being released without charge on Thursday, is alleged to have procured funds from several people by falsely telling them he needed medical treatment abroad.

The former inter-county player was arrested on Wednesday by officers from the Garda Economic Crime Bureau under the 2001 Criminal Justice Act.In a statement issued by the Gardai, they said: “The male arrested in the Eastern Region on February 22, 2023 in relation to an ongoing fraud investigation has since been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The man in question allegedly told GAA supporters that he needed to pay for life-saving treatment in the US.The figure of €1million has been described by sources as a possible “ballpark”, however it has not been fully established yetGardai are liaising with banks here over his financial dealings and it is understood medical records are being sought from three US hospitals.
