A study in Environmental Microbiome presents a method to combine 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing with traditional culture-based methods to evaluate the influence of treatment innovations and upgrades on the microbiome of the Chicago Area Waterway System.

]. Therefore, management efforts of water resources must take into account such spatio-temporal dependencies, particularly in fluctuating environments such as riverine systems. Moreover, riverine systems are recipients of diverse microbial inputs that influence their ecology. As an example, the Chicago Area Waterway System is an extensive, highly engineered urban river system that consists of over 76 miles of man-made canals and modified natural streams .

In collaboration with Chicago’s Metropolitan Water Reclamation District we conducted a 7-year investigation of the CAWS microbiome, collecting monthly samples of water and sediment across 12 sites as well as untreated sewage and treated effluent samples from two wastewater reclamation plants . We analyzed these samples with 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and fecal coliform enumeration, and continually monitored relevant physicochemical characteristics at each site.

The primary goals of this study were to a) characterize the microbial communities of the CAWS and its spatio-temporal dynamics across 12 riverine sites and 2 wastewater treatment plants for 63 timepoints over 7 years, b) compare such characterizations to the trends found in a traditional, culture-dependent approach to measuring water quality, and c) examine the impact of water quality improvement interventions on the microbial ecology of the CAWS.

Temperature, pH, conductivity, and turbidity of water samples were measured using a handheld YSI multiparameter digital water quality meter. NO

It’s not all about control: challenging mainstream framing of eating disorders - Journal of Eating DisordersBackground The concept of control has long been suggested as a central factor in eating disorder (ED) aetiology. The concept is now so mainstream that it risks being used in a potentially reductionist, stigmatising or otherwise harmful manner. In this paper, we explore and discuss our positions on the use of control-related terminology for EDs. Methods The authors of this auto-ethnographic position paper include academic researchers, individuals with lived experience and clinicians (not mutually exclusive). In sharing our experiences and observations, we aim to raise awareness of the wider impacts that control framing can have on ED perceptions, treatment, recovery and individuals’ lived experience. Results We argue that although control can play a role in some ED experiences, an overemphasis upon this factor to the exclusion of other conceptualisations is not beneficial. Conclusions To mitigate against pathologisation of an individual, it is important to challenge a discourse that can lead to EDs being perceived as something ‘wrong’ with the individual, rather than a consequence of life events or other environmental influences. We identify priorities for the future for researchers, clinicians, policy makers and the wider public.

Study of adult e-cigarette users' attempts and experiences of quittingMany e-cigarette (vape) users intend to quit, but there are few evidence-based interventions to help them do so. Due to this lack of interventions for e-cigarette cessation, researchers in the United States studied how and why users attempt to quit independently. The study, published in the journal Environmental Research and Public Health, analyzed both barriers and facilitators to quitting e-cigarettes.
