Former B.C. NDP cabinet minister Melanie Mark announces she will resign after taking health-related leave of absence

Melanie Mark, a former New Democrat cabinet minister, wiped away tears Wednesday as she gave what was likely her final speech in the British Columbia legislature.

She says she wasn’t quitting but is standing up for herself and putting herself and her two daughters first. “I have no regrets,” Mark says. “I have made mistakes, but I can’t turn back time. In many ways, I have done what I came here to change.” She says she entered politics to stand up for society’s underdogs and speak up for the voiceless and those who don’t vote.
