Doctors say the ban could help improve mental health and behaviour, so are energy drinks bad for young people?

The ban is part of a four-month trial aimed at improving mental health and behaviour.

A small town in Western Australia has banned under-18s from buying energy drinks as part of a research trial aimed at improving youth mental health and behaviour. "In a 500 millimetre can of energy drink, for example, it contains two cups of coffee, and up to 21 teaspoons of sugar, depending on the brand," she said.Ms Howard said studies have shown a number of negative health effects associated with energy drink consumption.

"Data from Australian population survey suggests that intake of energy drinks is highest among adolescents and young adults," said lead researcher Dr Belinda Morley.

I’ll still gladly have my 500ml energy drink before I go for a mountain bike or dirt bike ride. It gives me the boost I need to push myself harder/faster.

But what am I going to drink my Jaegers with? Oh yeah, I'm an old fart, it doesn't effect me. 😂 Leave the kids alone.

I used to drink them daily, can’t even smell one now without feeling sick 😩

Physical repercussions of having too much caffeine are very real. The extra ingredients (taurine, guarana, etc) have significant mental impact - constant brain fog !! Better to resolve root cause for why you need such strong energy & druglike effects in a drink ! 🧃

i don't remember what year but i recall a woman working at a pub in East Freo on NYE years ago (over 18 or so years), had an (unknown - 2-3 maybe) amount of energy drinks on the night to get through the shift...she had an undiagnosed heart condition and passed away.

Processed garbage for your health and more litter in our streets.

Isn't it up to the parents?

energy drinks contain far too much caffeine for teenagers or children to be drinking.

'Doctors'.. Really, who are these so called doctors?

Most definitely! I worked with yng woman who was drinking 15 Red Bull a day!!!! I tried to get her to stop!

So let's have pharma uppers instead of sugar, caffeine and touring which are all natural by the way.

Maybe the more we explore the science of our inner engineering, the more the answer to this question becomes so much more obvious?

The two journalists don't state who the researcher is. Who are the subjects of the 'experiment' and how was their consent obtained. This is junk reporting on junk science.

Skeptical a retailer could lawfully do it. Under 18s could retaliate in the usual customer ways. I doubt the doctors are addressing cause and effect, as distinct from asserting an association.

everything sold in australian supermarkets is toxic as fuck

My doctor warned me of about 20 years ago from having engery drinks. Wasn't doing my heart any good.

Yet us adults won’t ban alcohol because it would effect OUR enjoyment. Want 2 know why younger generations don’t listen?Cause they know the older generations are 🐂💩- they are not prepared to go without for their principles - alcohol leads to more probs than red bull

Any artificial stimulus is bad.

And yet you have dim wits pushing for 16 year olds to vote , go figure hey 🤣🤣

As with everything, too much is bad for you. This won't stop people from attaining them. You can buy slabs of the stuff online. Or just make a coffee take a ginseng supplement and a Berocca. 🤣

Didn't know towns had the power to ban the sale of products like that
