Amid concerns crime is sparking a healthcare staffing emergency in Alice Springs, doctors and nurses say they are exhausted.

According to the nurses' union, remote public and Aboriginal-controlled health clinics are seeing vacancy rates of more than 60 per cent.

"A lot of staff are saying, 'Why should I continue to work as permanent? Why don't I resign and come back as agency and I'll get paid triple what I am now?" she said. "They may need to look at closing maybe two or even three clinics in the Central Australian area," Ms Hatcher said."It just blows the budget out, because the hospital has to spend a lot of money on locum fees, rather than regular staff wages," he said. While this staff shortage is biting across the board, primary care is feeling it particularly keenly.

This had caused many doctors and nurses to flee private general practices and Aboriginal-controlled health services., a decline in medical students choosing general practice, and lower pay compared to other specialties were also to blame.NT Health said a domestic and international recruitment drive was underway to attract clinical staff to the Territory.

I can envisage in the not too distant future homes surrounded by razor wire with frightened people behind it like Papua New Guinea. And they think 3 weeks of 40 police presence is going to fix this and then pull out again and leave the half dozen cops to cope . I don’t think so

Sounds like most health services in NSW.

Doctors and nurses ㆍ Caregivers ㆍ Need to increase We support mani with a well-paying job Build a hospital in each tow

Leave a shipping container of metho and clear australians out of alice springs, the rest should sort itself out

Understandable. As much as you care, you can only do so much, especially when the government is not only ignoring you but doing it's best to make things worse. Go and take better care of yourselves for a change.

If I felt uncomfortable, unable to do my work because of threats, intimidations, abuse, assaults & lack of support from the 'communities' who were my main sources of clients, students, patients, customers, I'd leave too. Doesn't take a genius to work out why, surely?

Get out while you still can

And what is labor doing about it, here have tens of millions of dollars that will make it go away.

Just Alice just Alice you need to get out more ABC plenty of bullshit stories everywhere else everywhere

Get Albo to take a selfie…that will save it. 🙄

Feels like the hospitals need a staff wing to house staff securely. If my workplace was understaffed, my streets risky, my house or car broken into, and I see the same pattern of doing nothing, I'd leave too.

What a disaster. 3 billion dollars wasted with nothing to show for it. The money is not reaching the services that require it. Where are the security personnel to protect health staff? Where are the police? Are offenders being punished? Low alcohol beer should be sold only.

Don't worry, the voice will fix that

because of vandalism n break ins Alice has become a wasteland Parents need to be responsible

This is so sad. Australia is turning into an second America? I hope not.

But the voice will fix this... along with stopping child rapes and chronic alcohol abuse. Wake up to yourselves lefty flogs.

Wonder what Nareen Young's answer to this is.

sad to see there's only so much abuse that even the best clinicians can take amazing courage and fortitude that these workers have stayed this long a credit to their work ethic

No surprise there. It seems it’s other people’s voices that are not being heard, the people who can run things and are trying to help while city based aboriginal activists indulge in race politics and power play.

Sad to see. Now tell us ABC how will the voice fix this?
