A pediatrician involved in creating new treatment guidelines for obese children in Canada says an “alarming” rise in obesity has led to a greater need for surgery for teens whose mental and physical suffering typically worsens into adulthood.

Dr. Melanie Henderson, a pediatric endocrinologist and researcher at Sainte-Justine Hospital in Montreal, said guidelines expected to be published later this year will go beyond obesity determination measures such asbody mass index to include kids' overall quality-of-life experiences.

She said there's greater acceptance that medication and bariatric surgery should be offered early as options for a subset of children because obesity is a chronic disease versus a risk factor for other illnesses. “We used to think that obesity in childhood wasn't a big deal, that they'll outgrow it,” she said. “But in fact, that's been disproven. So, very young children grow up to be adolescents with obesity and adults with obesity.”

A class of drugs called GLP-1 agonists are given by injection, and have been approved for use in children aged 12 and up, said Henderson, adding they are probably the best option in reducing hunger but cost almost $400 a month. “If we get five kids a year undergoing surgery, which probably represents about 10 per cent of the patients that are referred to us, that would be a big amount,” Erdstein said, adding an operation is offered after two years of behavioural intervention.

What is happening....

Just another ploy to make the doctors and pharmacists rich!

How did we suddenly see surgery as an option for everything? For centuries, we avoided it at all cost. Yes, I realize it is safer now, but why is it now a first resort than a last one. What a sad world we live in.

Don’t over feed the kids. Don’t let them eat fast food from a young age.

Healthier foods are more expensive, almost cases of obesity are from poor diet and very rarely stem from a health condition that’s causing the weight gain. Wanna help w obesity, make groceries more fucking affordable!!!!!!

Maybe lay-off the McDonalds KFC, buying junk food at 7 eleven Slurpees. This comes down to parenting.

How about exercise and healthy eating habits? More walks and more vegetables. Less time at home and more time outdoors?

Can we remember that doctors make money off this... Take recommendations with skepticism!

I weep for the future....

Why they don't go exercise every day at YMCA gym and put them on diet I go work out every day seven days a week and twice a day and I do encourage my young son to work out too eh

Food affordability is the true problem, what goes on sale is never healthy food but any kind of food is better than no food and that is what many families face.

Or exercising you fatties

I am losing all faith in the medical community. Their willingness to take ridiculous, and sometimes dangerous, experimental, measures with respect to children is horrible... and it's not just with obesity. If something goes wrong, people should start looking at malpractice suits.

Stop feeding them garbage! Had teenagers for a party and they had no idea what was on the table!! Because was no pizza..only home made ...they thought are fake..stop frozen food, stop hamburger every day, just stop...there are other ways to cook for young with meat and healthy

Maybe if the cost of REAL ,wholesome food was cheaper that takeout garbage, it would be easier for parents to feed their kids well rounded meals

Wtf is up with the medical industry jumping to surgries for everything. How about, exercise, proper diet (as in healthy eating), getting the right amount if sleep, drinking water etc. You know the stuff healthy folks have always done to not be obese

Cut Copy Paste from US.

Time to start prescribing MAID to fat kids

Stop putting food in mouth.. no surgery.. no fat kid

OR…. Tell parents to stop buying their fat kids McDonald’s and Burger King crap, take away their play stations, make them eat a salad once in a while and get them to a park to run around a few times a week. 🤔

It's a bandaid

Wtf… or just keeping a fit body by exercising (that doesn’t mean be an anorexic gym monkey). Surgery should only ever be a very last resort.

No. Eating less and exercise.

My 12 yo is over weight. Good life fitness accepts 12 yos. He got a gym membership. Surgery causes life-long issues with malnutrition and should never be performed on a child. Life altering elective surgeries need consent, children can't consent.

Why not teach children the importance of healthy eating and physical activity rather than pushing medical procedures on them?!

Ugh how about we start teaching healthy relationships with food and exercise. When you have healthy habits, a healthy weight will follow

Insurance companies should be covering anti-obesity medications too

Surgery…really. How about PhysicalActivity You’d likely have to start with the parents…before they have the kids🤔and perhaps their parents, too.

Forget surgery. Put down the fork and start moving.

Surgery for obesity and sexual change for kids. Wonderful.

No! That’s wrong. Just eat healthy and exercise. Life isn’t fixed with a bloody pill or surgery.

Damn how about eating properly and maybe getting some exercise?

Oh, the doctors running private surgery clinics who attended Doug Ford’s daughters stag and doe? Those doctors? Surgery for child obesity. SMH We need to do better.
