The science lab is an arena to challenge the world to rethink the limits of science for brimming Mthatha-born young scientist, who studies platinum group-based metals to develop a cancer treatment.

He adds he is intrigued by investigating how platinum group-based drugs work because they are rarely explored, the field of organometallic chemistry is relatively young and because South Africa produces 75% of platinum metals. “I lost my aunt, who was really close to me, to cancer and the place where I come from is heavily impacted by a lack of resources. But, what concerned me the most was the lack of medication, and one thing that makes medicine inaccessible to us is that we import most of our medication to treat various ailments, whether they are communicable or non-communicable. I always wanted to help people through science,” adds Welsh.

He is very fond of his laboratory equipment but there is one, particularly, that tops the list, the NMR – Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. He explains:
