A Review in Cancer Cell International discusses the molecular mechanisms of microRNA- 216a during tumor progression and paves the way to suggest it as a probable therapeutic and diagnostic target in cancer patients.

Considering the importance of identifying non-invasive markers to facilitate early tumor detection, in the present review we investigated the role of miR-216a during tumor progression. It has been reported that miR-216a has mainly a tumor suppressor function through the regulation of signaling pathways and transcription factors, which ultimately changes the cell cycle, apoptosis, and autophagy.

However, there are some challenges to use the miRNAs in tumor targeted therapy including the miRNA degradation by the cytoplasmic nucleases and the adverse influences of the selected miRNAs in normal biological cellular functions. Therefore, the side effects can be expected following the miRNA targeted therapy.

The convergence of epigenetics and math to predict and intercept cancer cell behaviorIt is now widely understood that cancer is a disease of acquired defects in genes and gene function. An article published Feb. 9 in Science, and authored by Andrew Feinberg, M.D., of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences (IBBS) and Andre Levchenko, Sc.D., M.S., of the Yale School of Engineering and Applied Science, addresses new quantitative approaches to better define and measure these defects in gene function, known as epigenetics, and their interplay with the genetic landscape of cancer.

Oncolytic virus treatment produces promising results in patients with triple-negative breast cancerTriple-negative breast cancer accounts for approximately 15% of all breast cancer cases. Patients with this subtype typically have poorer outcomes compared to other breast cancers, suggesting the need for improved treatments. One new therapy being investigated at Moffitt Cancer Center involves oncolytic viruses, which infect and kill the cancer cells. In a new article published in Nature Medicine, the researchers, led by Hatem Soliman, M.D., share results from a phase 2 clinical trial of the oncolytic virus talimogene laherparepvec (TVEC) combined with standard chemotherapy in patients with early stage triple-negative breast cancer. NatureMedicine This researcher claims to have found a cure for cancer. There are reports of hundreds of people cured, including terminal patients.
