Opinion: Artificial intelligence programs like ChatGPT are already here. What do we do about it? [Opinion]

The implications and ramifications for this application are serious, and need to be addressed to determine how it can best be utilized within our society and culture.

I wonder if this can ever be achieved in a society and culture that insists upon immediate gratification without the effort it requires?I have been a writing tutor for more than 20 years. My students have included Marine veterans, business people and hundreds of college, high school and middle school students, including some whose native language was not English. Students who are comfortable with their writing skills don’t need a tutor.

I realize artificial intelligence is a technical innovation to make people’s lives easier. But if AI is not monitored, living an easy life will be impossible because it will be based on deception.ChatGPT has been a controversial topic in the past few months because of its impressive ability to write papers automatically, with quality that can avoid detection at most institutions.

As for the liberty aspect of it, I believe that tools like ChatGPT should remain publicly available, because they can be useful if not used maliciously. It is a matter of who uses the tool rather than the tool itself being the problem. The automatically generated essay didn’t turn itself in; a dishonest student did.

Whether one wants “the history of hot air ballooning” or “a discussion of the nature of man in 1,500 to 1,700 words,” some app will happily oblige. Out of a slurry of algorithms will come something. It could be Velveeta or perhaps even insightful. The development of ChatGPT and other AI language models is one of the most significant advancements in the field of artificial intelligence. The ability of these models to generate human-like responses, perform complex tasks and even pass professional exams is a testament to their sophisticated capabilities. However, the impact of this technology on society is a subject of much debate, with valid arguments for both hope and fear.
