The American Medical Association first classified obesity as a chronic disease nearly 10 years ago. Now, the rise in popularity of Wegovy and Ozempic has shifted some cultural and medical conversations around weight and weight loss.

Nearly a decade has passed since the American Medical Association first classified obesity as a chronic disease, one that can require medical interventions beyond diet and exercise.

Both drugs are brand names for semaglutide, a medication that can lower blood sugar levels and suppress the appetite. Ozempic is approved to treat Type 2 diabetes in adults, while Wegovy is approved for weight loss in two groups: Those 12 and older with obesity, and adults who are overweight and also have least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure or cholesterol.

"Two-thirds of Americans did not wake up one morning and choose to be overweight or to have obesity. This is not a behavioral choice or behavioral disease. This is a chronic disease — a chronic, treatable disease — and we should treat it like we treat any other disease, with medications and with interventions that target disease mechanisms," said Dr. Ania Jastreboff, an associate professor at the Yale School of Medicine.

"Obesity is a chronic, progressive and misunderstood disease that requires long-term medical management," it said in a statement.

The fat shaming.

All of these class of drugs are being OVERUSED for people to just lose weight. Those of us that have Type 2 Diabetes cannot get the Trulicty, Monjarno, or what we need due to shortages.

My wife has Type 2 Diabetes . She has normal weight and her diabetes Is genetic. It’s becoming a hassle just to find Ozemepic due to people wanting to lose a few pounds. They are endangering people who need this for their disease. Most obese people already have type two…

Consciously deciding to eat too many calories every day is a disease?

Wealthy corporations poison Americans and intentionally make them sick and then come back and sell us the cure. It's why many poor countries actually live longer than Americans do, there's no profit in making poor people sick because they have no money to pay for the cure.

Yes & let me help you! THIS med landed me in the ER & surprisingly, I was told I was the 4th person in the ER THAT day using THAT med!

Blame everything and everyone except the person shoving the food down their own throats while laying around scrolling social media on their phones. Disease my ass. Take some accountability for your own selves

One day maybe the media and politicians will admit the crap they put and allow in food is creating all of this. Stop allowing hydrogenated oils in Foods to start. Wegovy isn’t a cure, of course you will regain if you stop, our food and hormones are broken.

The Only Drug That Makes You Lose Weight Is Cocaine

Good for some obese patients, but it doesn't address the addiction aspect.

Do more. Eat less. Lose weight. Simple formula. Hard to do.

Those are drugs they are not healthy
