Microsoft said it can add $2 billion in revenue for every 1 percentage point of search share it gains.The search wars are on, with Microsoft's ChatGPT-powered Bing and Google's Bard both vying for attention this week, with splashy presentations showing how search as we know it is about to be completely transformed by artificial intelligence.
"For every 1 point of share gain in the search advertising market, it's a $2 billion revenue opportunity for our advertising business," said Philippe Ockenden, Microsoft's CVP of finance, on a call with analysts Tuesday. Adding AI-powered capabilities to Bing and the Edge browsers will make the search experience better, driving more use, which in turn will attract more advertisers, Ockenden said.
"While the user may see fewer ads, they will be of higher value to advertisers," Ockenden said on the call.
