The rules of the road in Ireland are notoriously tight with Roads Policing Units up and down the country ensuring motorists stick to them.

When it comes to operating a vehicle, one of the most important laws is that the driver, and the occupants of the car wear a seatbelt as UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak found out to his cost last week.

If caught without one on, you must either pay the €120 fine within 28 days, or face an increased fine of €180 payable within 56 days of the offence. However, if you are convicted in court for not wearing a seatbelt, five penalty points will be added to your licence and you will be fined €2,000. This also applies to people who are supervising a learner driver who is reversing, however, the seat belt must be put back on as soon as they continue to drive forwards.
