WA authorities are desperate to find a tiny, silver capsule emitting dangerous amounts of radiation which was lost while being transferred from a mine site.

Help keep family & friends informed by sharing this articleShare

Chief Health Officer Andy Robertson said the capsule was lost while it was being transported, somewhere between a mine site north of Newman and Malaga, north east of Perth. "It emits both beta rays and gamma rays so if you have it close to you, you could either end up with skin damage inlcuding skin burns," he said."Now that will take a period of time but obviously we are recommending people not be close to it or hang on to it."

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services is leading search efforts, coordinating a team involving the Department of Health, WA Police, and other subject matter experts.DFES Country North chief superintendent David Gill said there would be "challenges" in locating such a small object.

BillGates was just in Australia 🇦🇺 Makes sense !

UM.. Did they get it back?

Someone call Homer Simpson

Tiny....but alarming

I've heard that Coles and Woolies are out of stock of Geiger Counters - panic buying? ;)

It's real warm so I'm using it as a pillow heater

Jesus christ not again... this is literally like the 4th time when will we learn not to just leave this shit for people to find it

Junkertown will be real in 10 minutes😳

What I want to know is why something like that wasn't in a larger, better sealed container instead of just being allowed to bounce around inside only a shittily secured travel box w/ large bolt holes in it. It should have been a boxes in boxes sort of deal. Beyond irresponsible.

Simple. Just follow the trail of screaming turds left behind by the glowing green five-headed kangaroo.

This is A joke, right?

Currently making McDonald's Sprite

Así que no solo en México se 'pierden' cosas radiactivas xd

Why did this happen in Australia AND the US

Hey peoples, tip from a citizen of Goiania: If it shines blue, don't eat it, wrap in plastic, and call the authorities!

Now you’ve outed my long plan to become a superhero or supervillain, whichever works out.

pastdll YOU ATE IT DIDNT YOU SILLY

wtf is a WA

'The capsule is tiny – 6mm diameter by 8mm high.' That is so small lost people wouldn't even notice it

Ask your mother

hahah ....... loooooooooool oopsies!!!!!!!!!! :3 :3 :3 :3 XDXDXDXD STAY SILLAY!!!!!!!

oops my bad 😣

Of course the cesium 137 can be weaponized. You can't make a fission bomb from it but you can make a dirty bomb with it. APANSA had better come down on these clowns.

Lost or stolen. Cesium 137 is a hot source and would have been in larger container. There should have been sign offs on each handover. How did apansa let this happen? auspol

oh my bad lol tasted good though

Western Australia Not Washington state. I hope it's found soon & everyone in Western Australia stays safe & happy.

Lol “public health warning” as thousands of people live near Hanford 💀

It should be impossible to lose custody of something radioactive. How did this happen

NEGROPHOBlA they're finally dropping Goiânia 2!

There is no chance a bird just swallowed it? If so, it can be anywhere.

BronteAure 😨

I'M GONNA EAT IT

What the heck was it ? Part of a logging tool ?

I ate it

The hunt begins

Goiânia moment?

0.09 Roentgen

can i have it please, i pinky promise i can be trusted with nuclear materials

Im sorry, but how do you just LOSE some highly dangerous radioactive chemicals?

my fault g

Da fuck is WA?

i will find it and eat it.

rihanna

What? Oh you mean the cool cylinder I found that gave me an extra arm? Sure it has like 5 tumors but hey! Free arm

Sorry I got hungry

Where was the radioactive cylinder lost? WA Where? WA I'm asking you where it was lost. WA Omg

Two-headed kangaroos being born next year?

Wow it looks just like an old stressed out man. Should be hard to find.

Does it look anything like this? My kids found it outside and can’t stop playing with it. It does this silly thing to the camera when you open it!

jirachi_bee did you eatid it?

OH SHIT SORRY! I actually initially thought that before I read the article too

pelo visto n aprenderam com o césio137

How on earth do you 'lose' a radioactive cylinder!!

Radioactive drop bears 🐻

But nuclear energy will be safe right? 🤨

Me, with a suspiciously tiny radio active cylinder shaped belly: *burp* if you’re looking for that tasty cylinder, I don’t have it! Look elsewhere!

In Australia, even the roadside litter is trying to kill you.

How do you lose that

EmeCe_sp :________

*has a large, cylinder shaped belly* dambn… i wonddr where it couldd *burps* be!

Well, uh… shit. Sure glad I don’t live there but I feel bad for the ones who do

It’s Cesium-137 like the one in the Brazil incident that contaminated a whole city and got people killed and sick in 1988

Used to use these a lot in civil engineering, for measuring density of tarmac and soil. A handful of these have been stolen from vehicles in the UK over the years.

It's in my ass now

It's a cylinder

If it is 19GBq as stated, get a bush aircraft and a scintillation counter and fly the route? This is 'safe to sit a meter or two away for 50 hours, absolutely do not touch.'

so, pretty sure what got misplaced is cesium-137. It’s water-soluble, which is why they keep it in a capsule. Usually it’s a cesium-chloride mix, a white powder, but it can have a blue glow to it.

Wow - same thing happened in 2007 in pretty much the same area. They found it under a tree.

Shouldn't they use drones to operate some geiger counters?

It'd be nice to know what isotope the source is made of.

One man's trash is another man's treasure, and friend, im building a nuclear reactor in my shed

Don’t blame me I voted for the tiny radioactive cylinder.

Australians: do not touch the pretty shiny powder. I repeat. Do not touch the pretty shiny powder.

Simpsons moment

TubeTimeUS

Hey! It's an average cylinder.

if I find it can I keep it?

Reports that the irresponsible Mining Company was Rio Tinto. Is this true ABC News? If yes then why aren’t you reporting this fact?

I blame Skylab.

Find it and get a fun emergency dose of potassium iodide! ☢️ *Disclaimer: potassium iodide is not actually fun.

I think this is in the intro to Simpsons episodes.

it's 8mm long and people are told not to get close to it. I reckon by the time you see it, it will be too late. Looks like we'll have to wait for the two-headed kangaroos to pop up before we find it.

I’ve been summoned.

skdh Hey skdh will you be including this story in your next YouTube video? In dire need of some better explanation than that offered by our fearful and lazy national broadcaster

It's only wafer thin...

Relax everyone, it just a lockdown trigger...

It's so radioactive that a gieger counter can't even spot it...

I swallowed it is that bad

This is absolutely bonkers

Since it’s apparently outside it’s container, why aren’t there hordes of people sweeping with Geiger counters on sticks, like metal detectors? Sounds like it was stolen by someone who had access, to me.

hey guy.. um Geiger counters exist.

A tiny dangerous radioactive button fell off the back of a truck or Ute... so it wasn't secured correctly 🙄 Can the media name & shame the companies who didn't make sure safety precautions were met?

Hey BenPHeard can you provide some sensible commentary about the risks? Point the public & journalists to information explaining what kind of particles could be involved.

6mm x 8mm? Good luck finding that but I don’t like their chances

Stay 5meters away from it. Oh and check your tyres in case you took it home with you.

It's cesium-137, pretty clearly. Why not say that?

If people are worried about this, wait till they hear about the health risk from getting a Covid infection.

Why on earth was such a hazardous item lost? Unimaginable that something like this could be lost so easily.

As log as it doesn't get built into an apartment building wall like in history, they should be able to track it down. Scary. Hope they find it.

Who knew that ”The front fell off” sketch by the late John Clark and Brian Dawe might be repeated in real life ?

Cesium has a half-life of 30 years, which means that the 0.2 Ci of Cs-137 will decay down to one-tenth of a curie in about 30 years. Cs-137 is a cesium isotope that emits beta and gamma radiation.

What it looks like (taken from article)

In my opinion, Australian conservatives are not fit to take proper care of the land, and this is an example of that.

nuclearkatie

It’s going to turn the water supply into Ecto Cooler

It would be more beneficial for your article thumbnail to show the scaled image of the radioactive cylinder, since that is what people need to look out for, instead of the guy.

6mm in diameter, 8mm 'long' maybe. WTH let them describe it as wide!? Tall is another alternate.

I love the detailed description of how this capsule escaped the vehicle and the container it was presumably being transported in. Some mumbling about bolts, vibrations and containers collapsing. We used to transport far less dangerous sources in sealed lead pots.

Hey guys I found this cool metal tube, it says 'Drop and Run' on it and theres a neat logo. Anyone know what this is? Some kind of band merchandise maybe? I can't take a picture because my camera stopped working when it got close

Feels like one of funranium ‘s stories.

Anyone know what isotope this would be? (Yeah, I could probably work it out through research or even thinking a bit, but that smacks of effort.)

I thought those post office jiffy bags were pretty tough

It’s only WA

Forbidden jujube!

No worries lads, I’ve found it

So are they just driving up and down the road with a Geiger counter?

The WA_Police are looking for a truck driver in relationship to the dropping of a radioactive capsule dropped somewhere between Perth and Newman in the Pilbara in Western Australia

This chief health officer should resign for the unethical laws he inflicted on the population of Western Australia.

Woopsie doopsie!

Are they serious? Who the fuck is ever going to find that

0.2 Roentgen per Hour Not terrible. Not great. ☢️ WA Radioactive Chernobyl

Would have thought it would be in a clearly identifiable canister and transported securely. Are we getting the whole story here?

And Coalition wants Nuclear Power ?

If I find it, can I eat it?

“It emits both beta rays and gamma rays....” Gamma rays.... Imagine giant green angry kangaroos with muscles. Or giant lizards. Or giant emus.

The just wing it mentality of some aussies would be my greatest fear if we were ever to develop a nuclear power industry here, things like this should never happen.

Fell off the shelf an rolled down the hill did it?

You can always trust a white capitalist organisation: ita will sort it

I'm going to laugh if it's wedged in the tyre of a random truck.

I borrowed it yesterday - so i could cook up my lamb cutlets on the BBQ. The radioactive isotopes add the extra flavour kick to it - family said it made them glow with fervishness. Now that OZ day is over, will return said item. Thanks.

wat the actual fuk?

try bart simpson?

wtyppod

S,ok I’ve lent it some dude called Muhammad he tells me hisis needs it

Let's get lots of reactors ...YAY

What a cracking advert for PeterDutton_MP nuclear option!

So the search for a needle in the biggest haystack ever begins. Good luck ,going to need it.

They should check eBay.

Dashcam of when it got lost

Hope she's okay

Good luck finding that. Something the size of a 10c coin lost in an area of 1400km. Why the heck wasn't in a decent box?

A fellow called Sheldon has it I hear.

WA is a big place, more specific ?

TYPO .........damage inlcuding skin burns,' he said...... ....

What? Likely run over by now?

In WA, it seems we can't get anything right. We don't even treat the transportation of radioactive materials as a serious thing. Striving for mediocrity, but only ever achieving partial competence. 🤡

-head hits desk- Australia needs a NACC... Urgently.

How on earth you don't include a photo of it in the article ABC NEWS! for better recognition?

Anything on RobodebtRC today?

Ohhh tiny you say?

What, no lockdown?
