A 42-year-old woman has watched the sky soften into sunset from her fire escape in Toronto’s west end for nearly half of her life, but her time there is dwindling. She’s battling terminal breast cancer, and now an eviction notice.

“I don't understand how one human being could do this to another human being. This could actually kill me at this stage in my illness,” Abra Shiner, a longtime residential tenant and owner of a popular Toronto bar, told CTV News Toronto.

“It’s just a matter of time before it hits an organ we can’t cut out,” Shiner said about the illness spreading through her lymphatic system. Her ovaries are scheduled to be removed next week.For months she said she was managing, balancing doctors’ appointments, treatment, surgery and running, her beloved bar of seven years at Dundas Street West and Brock Avenue. Consistent with her more than two decade rapport, she said she has continued to pay her rent early or on time.

“I don’t want to have my entire life uprooted and destroyed. Displacing me from my home, I wouldn't be able to survive the stress of moving 23 years of life.” who will “consider the circumstances of both parties” when an eviction hearing takes place, the LTB told CTV News Toronto.

If it wasn’t sold to new owners then she would’ve been good. They can get you out of your rent/lease by just listing the house for sale, because it’s a private owner renting/leasing, not a company building like an apartment building.

Where is the mayor here !! And the bunch of talkers, there at the city hall. She need to recover. That’s all.

It’s always “one of the children” or “family member” It’s a game scum landlords play. Allows them to legally evict, wait the necessary period of time, renovate and raise the rent astronomically for new tenants. Greedy landlords finding loopholes and screwing over good people.

We need better government than we're getting. Life is becoming far too stressful for so many of us & when our healthcare system is being privatized by politicians w/out mandates to do so. This is no way to be treated. This person's been paying taxes for yrs, runs a business ffs.

Sounds like they are kicking out someone who pays the lowest rent because they’ve been there the longest so they can slap a coat of paint on and triple the rent. Fact the tenant has cancer appears coincidental. Need more protections and fines for “LL wants to move in” lies.

An immediate family member of the new owner plans to live in the unit. Legally, that’s a slam dunk.

The Title should say “government does nothing for our citizens in need”. It’s Not the landlords fault he has bills to pay too. All thought if she ask the government they probably would just offer her assist death.

Place has sold, new owners can do whatever they like unfortunately. Cancer or not. It just so happens she has cancer. That's the only difference. It's a shit world we live in with shit people, get use to it.

This is sad news. I hope she finds and gets the help she needs.

No worries - trudeau is giving families 7500 dollars to renovate their homes now to move those family members in. :) That will surely fix it.

Unfortunate that she has cancer, but the new owners are just that - owners. I'm sure this lady would place her family over someone elses in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, life isn't fair.

Landlord (the new owners of the property) will lose this if they take it to LTB. Ownership aside, you must serve your tenant proper notice. I hope she knows that.

Unfortunate, but that's the life of a renter - house was sold to new owners. Rental housing is not social housing, thus the new owners have no obligation to house her.

Its doesnt matter how long she has lived there, what she does for a living, nor what her health complications are. This is not a charity or npo.

I know they left me for 15 years they don't care I will not stop exposing this company Wich is run by gov wsib bunch of thiff s period.investigate them.

It is unfortunate timing due to her cancer but the house was sold to new owners. They are under no obligation to keep a renter if they do not want one. She has to move.

It's unfortunate but she doesn't own the place! Owners have to have rights too. Their property and finances can't be held hostage because the tenant has fallen ill.

Doctors are going to convince her to MAID herself so they can collect organs to sell.
