Jagmeet Singh spent months looking high and low for ways to distinguish himself from Justin Trudeau, and this week the prime minister handed him a huge gift — an opening for the NDP leader to define himself as the true defender of public health care.
Initially, it appeared to be an awkward marriage. Singh spent the last election saying the prime minister could not be trusted to keep his promises and here was the NDP leader now putting his faith in Trudeau to getCentral to the agreement was dental care — a program that was floated in the Liberals’ 2019 Throne Speech as an idea worth exploring but never included in the Grits’ election platforms or fiscal plans.
Watching the prime minister tour automaker Stellantis’s Windsor assembly plant Tuesday, where union representative Dave Cassidy barged into the media availability to praise Trudeau at the microphone, you could see the scale of Singh’s challenge — one that isn’t made easier by Singh’s urban image and a perception he has difficulty connecting with his party’s blue-collar base.
“I have been saying for years that delivery of health care is the business, the responsibility of the provinces,” he told the Star, noting that he had, at times, penalized provinces who had gone too far into private delivery.
althiaraj It’s pretty clear Harper is the man behind the curtain right now and holds unelected power
althiaraj If Trudeau messes up the provincial funding coming it will be a gift to the Conservatives. Right now Singh has an opportunity to clearly state what he would do differently in this instance right now. How would he stop Doug from doing what Doug wants to do. If he doesn’t he’s done
althiaraj Jagmeet should be marking PMJT’s door day in and day out until he understands that his continued support depends on real action being taken. He has power to do that.
althiaraj Why would he say anything publicly when they’re finalizing negotiations to modernize healthcare funding?
althiaraj Well the use of private facilities either is or is not consistent with the Canada Health Act. If it is not as a result of say, the charging of facility fees for medically-necessary procedures, the amounts charged will be deducted from the federal health transfer. If not, not.
althiaraj I doubt that people will never vote for the turncoat
althiaraj Jag's famous dental care plan is essentially the same as Ford's plan...government payment for the delivery of healthcare services by private service providers..
althiaraj Dream on .
althiaraj Only if Mr. Singh speaks up..otherwise what is his value
althiaraj TorontoStar And still, he biffs every opportunity he gets.
