Doug Ford says Canada’s premiers are staying united in talks with the federal government as negotiators close in on a deal for additional health-care funding to alleviate crowded emergency rooms and long waiting lists.

“It’s not going to be a one-off for Ontario, another for someone else,” the premier said Friday in London where he announced the latest tranche of his plan to ease the health-care crunch facing the province — tuition incentives for would-be nurses, medical lab technologists and paramedics.

“No matter where you live in Ontario, we want to connect you to more convenient care closer to home,” Ford said.Taking aim at critics who accuse Ford’s Progressive Conservative government of undermining the public hospital system with his move, Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones said getting help from privately owned clinics — some of which are not-for-profit and others for-profit — is about “how do we make the system stronger.

Duclos added the federal government would use “penalties” against provinces “if those obligations are not upheld.” On the talks, Duclos cited “a change of tone and a change of direction in the last few weeks. I think that everybody now agrees, including the premiers … that we need to focus on results for the health-care workers and patients.”
