A union representing high school teachers in Ontario is calling on the province to provide funding for anti-violence training programs and the hiring of mental health support staff to address violence in and around schools.

The president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation says the union's members are calling for help in ensuring schools are safe.

Karen Littlewood says the issue of school violence has been a challenge in Ontario schools for a long time, but she is hearing from teachers that the situation appears to be worse than before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Education Minister Stephen Lecce's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the call for funding but a spokeswoman has said the government is providing additional resources for mental health, after-school programming and sports, and mentorship programs for students.

Grace Lee said last week that the government has committed to hiring nearly 7,000 new education workers and 1,000 teachers, while increasing student mental health funding to $90 million under this year's budget. Schools across Ontario have seen violence in recent months including a fatal shooting outside a Toronto school in October, a stabbing at a London, Ont., high school that sent a female victim to hospital with serious injuries in November and another stabbing at a high school in Oakville, Ont., last month.

How about you send letters home with the students to the parents telling them to do a better job. It's starts at the home it should be fixed at the home

Ha. But you removed police from schools...

Teachers get PD days. Devote those days to this.

The Lady from the TDSB on your channel said that they are putting together special actions groups to discuss the problem of violence. What Crap......

It all starts with the parents. The parents need to be more accountable to teach their kids what's right and wrong

Additional staff would not be required if bad behaviour actually had consequences and liasion officers were allowed back in school.

That’s what police are for. Let them back in schools.

The question is, why do we have violence in schools? What are the root causes? Nothing is sacred, everything needs to be examined. When you have the facts, act on them.

You people don’t realize that the kids copy what they see and I can tell you half the teachers at these schools are angry and mean losers.

How about start with throwing out all of the no consequences bs. Give principals and teachers ability to at least enforce some disabling ( detention , suspensions) .

Should organize a strike for that

Jezzzzz. Teachers whining again!!! Never stops. More tax payer dollars Required. Hey let’s do this. Everyone do their jobs. Especially teachers. No whining. Do what you are paid to do. Parents to. Be a parent. Make kids accountable or suspend them. Enough. No more babying.

Anything but police!

You don’t have to hire Training staff bring back the police officers like it was before

Totally agree, our kids need to feel safe in a trusted environment

We hired people to look after school violence, we call them Police

But they wanted police officers out of schools. Hmmm……

What happened with having Police in the schools. Yeah Woke is killing our kids in schools.

Parents need to parent

Maybe police should be put back in schools. Imagine that!

Many parents no longer parenting.

School violence or BLACK violence? 🤡

Can't even get air purifiers in a class good luck with this

Stupid decisions have consequences

Training? What training? These are not kids but young criminals with guns. Put them in jail and keep students who want to learn safe from these idiots.

Solution is metal detectors and police stationed at every school period if you really want to reduce violence !

No

It's not education workers jobs to enforce law. The Boards didn't want cops near schools to avoid 'hurt feelings' and this is what it's come to. Let police do their jobs.

Bring back the police

Violence in schools will get worse, much worse. Mark my words

It's not on the teachers or school system, it's the parents of the children...

It's not up to gov. to disciple kids.

The big question should be, Why is this happening? Kids today get away with murder, literally!

Put police back in high schools. Stop mollycoddling students that are physically violent.

You had trained staff, you had School Liaison (Police) Officers!

How about putting police in schools?

Is it a coincidence that violence increased when they removed officers from schools?

Expel the students who are violent

Maybe the government should make CYW registered legislated professional for schools. That would be a must to have trained support staff!

Teachers should stop pushing gender ideology bullshit, stop pushing politicial ideologies etc. Children are not OK. They need age appropriate challenges such as math, reading, critical thinking and problem solving. Kids aren't mature enough to deal with this narrative.

school violence is a byproduct of massive third world immigration

Tell it to Jordan Peterson because he's going to be the next Prime Minister of Canada.

Here’s a thought. Maybe you shouldn’t have kicked all of the cops out if the schools. Your problem now

My high school had hall monitors. Kept the violence down but that was in the early 90s 😂

You mean like a police officer?

You mean peel region.

Sorry. In liberal Canada the teachers are the bad guys..

🙏🙏

Same teachers who lobbied for the removal of SROs, no doubt.

Maybe you should of kept those cops in school but noooooo feelings

The had a good deterrent system in police resource officers and Board discipline (suspensions and expulsion) and that worked, but they got rid of them both. Now the union wants more people hired. Not necessary.

All the people saying hire cops - cops literally abuse and assault people all the time.

You get what you voted for.

Let police back in school otherwise they are not scared

What people forget is that school violence impacts all the students and the teachers, custodians, assistants … imagine, being afraid when you are student in grade 1. Many students in the GTA are.

Hire staff to address violence. So don't want cops in schools yet want to hire staff to address violence. Proves we need cops in schools

Lol no shit. The last time a teacher was hospitalized, the parents sued the school and called them all racists.

Really? Want an immediate drop to zero for everybody. Use this model as the only one that exists all across the country, . . .doh. Homeschool in Alberta: Distance Education Courses It failed because the Reserves never got power or the computers needed.

As they should. I'm sick of putting out fires all day, making sure kids don't hurt others or me. The whole system is broken, and this is NOT the job I signed up for. Schools have become a mixing pot of students filled w potential who never thrive bcs of their violent peers.

Trudeau supporters calling on the province to do something about violence? They vote for it.

Here's a thought... Why not admit the dumb idea to take school resource officers out of so many schools was completely irresponsible? Complaining about violence in schools and hiring amateurs to deal with it is idiotic.

The ones who dont want police in schools must have something to hide / as always the goverment wont do crap pretty soon we will get like the U S

'minor injuries...from a bullet that bounced'!! Are you serious, ConservativePress24?

Novel idea: Hold kids ACCOUNTABLE….. there are minimal consequences for their actions. They know that. Isn’t about school resources. I grew up FEARING consequences to my actions IF they were not acceptable actions. Kids these days DGAF

Liberal policies most excellent results.

Once the 🤡 at federal level bans guns the violence should subside 🤣

If not they'll go on strike for it. Losers. Don't respect teacher's one bit.

There are so many factors at play here, and more training or staff won't address any of them.

Just admit you were wrong, apologize to the victims of the violence and to the families of the dead students and BRING BACK THE SRO’S!

Waste of time....

CZV416 It would be a very sensible public safety move to have at least some teachers/staff able to prove a handgun safe, if found inside the school property, with appropriate storage until police arrived.

What happens when liberal teachers make students go liberal.

How about just bringing back the rule of law to protect citizens instead of easy on crime liberal bs legislation?

Its racist to do this no? Thats what them progressives been crying about

Oh oh here we GO again.... teachers complaining...! Nothing new...never Happy.... another reason to strike.🤡

What are proposing self defence courses.

Or just how about create actual consequences for violet actions instead of woke coddling.

How long until they try to weasel this into 'violence days off'
