We continue to hear troubling stories of people with cancer being diagnosed far later than they should. We hear of delays for patients seeing specialists and receiving treatment — B.C. has some of the longest delays in the country. In some cases, the delays result in tragic consequences, with people facing incurable cancers soon after diagnosis.
Two in five Canadians are expected to receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. In late 2022, CCS released a special report on cancer prevalence, which showed that the number of people living with or beyond cancer in this country continues to grow, to over 1.5 million people, and includes approximately 215,000 British Columbians. While several factors have contributed to this increase, one is continuing to push this number upwards — Canada’s aging population. As B.C.
Further investing into recruiting and retaining health-care professionals in our cancer care system is another vital action. The province has taken promising steps toward this in its 70-point health workforce strategy and in its new payment model for primary-care providers. Recent investments from the Ministry of Health will enable B.C. Cancer to hire just under 400 new physicians, clinical and support staff, and to implement team-based care.
