When the odds are stacked against women, for mental health and the birth experience, postpartum mental health should be integral

Yes. Why not plan ahead? Postnatal mental health is something I talk about with all pregnant women in my clinical practice. However, there are many more women who have perinatal mental health risk factors who don’t have access to psychological support during pregnancy.Well, there’s a lot of them, I’m afraid. Being a woman who is pregnant is one of them. Women are more vulnerable to mental illness in the perinatal period than at any other time in their lives.

So, if one out of five pregnant women will meet the criteria for a perinatal mental illness at some point in their early motherhood journey, why isn’t mental health planning a normal part of preparing for parenthood? Especially when we know a “wait and seeOn top of affecting women, antenatal anxiety and depression can affect the developing foetus while postnatal anxiety or depression can affect the mother-infant relationship. Babies are very sensitive and in tune with their primary caregivers.
