Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston speaks to the media in October. - Eric Wynne / FileNova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has invited a number of health-care partners in the province to a Tuesday summit to discuss the existing crisis.

The health-care summit comes in the wake of the tragic story of Allison Holthoff, a 37-year-old mother of three who died after waiting long, excruciating hours for care inside an Amherst hospital emergency room on New Year’s Eve. The two deaths have Liberal Leader Zach Churchill calling for an emergency session of the legislature to discuss health care.

There were 558 emergency department deaths last year, the highest annual total in the last six years.
