This new hospital-based drama isn’t afraid to show the real ramifications of working in medicine as a motherIt’s a tough time to launch a medical drama., ITV1’s new series about three doctors returning to work after maternity leave, had a lot of nods to how tricky working through Covid was, but there was no talk of strikes and the hallways weren’t filled with trolleys. Immediately, it felt out of sync with the real crises gripping the NHS.

But when she was faced with a child going into septic shock, she was challenged on both practical and emotional levels, resulting in a distressing exploration of the life and death decisions a doctor must make, whatever’s going on at home. Helen , a registrar in acute medicine, had other things on her mind, scrolling through divorce lawyer websites during a welcome back lecture. Her husband , a consultant at the same hospital, had somehow found time during the pandemic to get it on with a junior doctor but was now insisting to their therapist that he wasn’t “demanding his conjugal rights”. According to him, Helen was to blame for their marital problems because she wasn’t sleeping with him.
