Opinion: It’s good policy to allow health care professionals to practice to their full potential when health systems are continually stretched. This frees up time for physicians and nurse practitioners.

Some of these patients can now be managed by pharmacists for a limited number of conditions.

Excessive use of antibiotics is a legitimate concern, but is misrepresented as a problem involving a pharmacists alone. But, for UTIs, afound pharmacists were far more likely, and, by a wide margin, to prescribe antibiotics appropriately according to guidelines, compared to physicians. Concerns around conflict of interest are understandable. As regulated health care professionals, pharmacists are no less ethical than other providers, as they are bound by aPatients were already consulting their pharmacist for a variety of issues, from the simple to the complex. This so-called change is an expansion that enhances a professional service in place already. The benefit to the patient lies in the potential to receive more timely care and effective choices for these conditions.
