China claims it has 'passed peak' of Covid surge as it reports 60,000 deaths 🔴 Chinese officials shared data after criticism from the World Health Organisation, but experts say they are still far lower than thought

has reported around 60,000 deaths of patients with Covid-19 since early December, but officials claim the peak of the current wave has passed.

China’s National Health Commission said that 59,938 coronavirus-related deaths had been registered in medical institutions since 8 December.Official Jiao Yahui told reporters the number of people in clinics has declined by more than 80 per cent since 23 December, adding: “These data show the national emergency peak has passed.”Until that point, China’s official death toll throughout the pandemic had been just 5,000.

Passengers arriving in Beijing on 8 January after quarantine rules were ditched for inbound travellers Earlier this month, the World Health Organisation also accused Beijing of playing down the scale of the new wave of infections.
