US federal health officials on Friday concluded that the risk of Pfizer's bivalent COVID-19 shot being linked to an increased risk of strokes in people aged 65 and older is"very unlikely" and not borne out by intensive investigation.
Based on preliminary data analysed by US health authorities, the safety monitoring system had flagged that the updated COVID-19 shot could be linked to a type of brain stroke in older adults. An ischemic stroke, also known as brain ischemia, is caused by blockages in arteries that carry blood to the brain.
"Although the totality of the data currently suggests that it is very unlikely that the signal in VSD represents a true clinical risk, we believe it is important to share this information with the public," the health authorities said.
