ICYMI: In his resignation letter to Premier Dennis King, Health P.E.I. board chair Derek Key warned that past leaders in the province have suffered the “ire of the electorate” due to past failures in the health-care system.

Key’s letter, provided to SaltWire Network by the Premier’s Office, outlined five recommendations intended to both increase accountability within Health P.E.I. and to provide the health authority with more independence.

Key also called for the premier to “acknowledge” that Health P.E.I. should be operated as an arm’s length crown corporation. But he also painted a picture of a health organization plagued by a lack of decision-making power, often hamstrung to make needed changes by its reliance on politicians and other government departments.

Key and Health P.E.I. CEO Michael Gardam have publicly stated Health P.E.I. should have control over hiring of health staff instead of the Public Service Commission. To date, there is no evidence Health Minister Ernie Hudson has moved to implement this change.
