Susan Leblanc is the NDP Health Spokesperson. She tells us why there should be a public inquiry into what’s behind the numbers that are trending upwards, according to the information they received through a Freedom of Information Request. | SaltWire

HALIFAX, N.S. — It shouldn’t come as a shock that there are people in serious medical distress who don’t survive after arriving at an Emergency Room in Nova Scotia. The case involving the death Allison Holthoff is bringing the issue of ER deaths to the forefront. According to information provided to the Nova Scotia New Democrats, she was one of 558 people who died in an ER in 2022. Susan Leblanc is the NDP Health Spokesperson.

The most recent inquiry we know about was the Mass Casualty Inquiry. And I'm wondering where you would hope an inquiry would take the data, where would go, how it would, end up giving us information that would be of benefit, knowing we're in the midst of a crisis? But it is it has awakened, I think, a concern on behalf of Nova Scotians for their loved ones who may have, you know, a similar experience. And so, yes, after every death, apparently there is an investigation, an internal investigation that is triggered. What we're asking for is sort of a more bird's eye view of the entire sort of system.

SL: Well, I think I think that's a really good point. You know, we know that, for instance, you referenced the Mass Casualty Commission. That was that's been very difficult for many, many people to follow. And so the people that have worked on that commission, you know, it's it's a it's a lot. And so, we're not necessarily saying we want all the, you know, the terrible details of every case.

SM: And there's no question they're overwhelmed. I know someone who works in a health care facility who says the biggest challenge right now is people are angry and frustrated. And you can imagine not having a family doctor. And you have to go to emerge because you want a prescription renewal. You can't get to your family doctor. There are all these all these things converging at once.

And many, many people just get sent away. So, yeah, it's like it's a problem. And we also know that people are waiting, you know, more than the appropriate amount of time in some cases, much more time for ambulances if they call. So, you know, all of these things are signs that our system is crumbling. The people working in the system are at the ends of their proverbial ropes like they are begging for change and for help.

THINKING OUT LOUD WITH SHELDON MacLEOD: Compassion not legal threats | SaltWireLiberal Leader Zach Churchill is asking why government's first response to the death in Cumberland County was to threaten legal action towards those who advocated on behalf of the grieving family. | SaltWire Churchill belonged to a government that furthered the centralization of power in NS, and an argument can be made that such centralization makes government operations more political. A political approach to healthcare is the only option given how the system is currently set-up. zachchurchill Every single day I’m going to post this zachchurchill until the media in this province starts doing their jobs, and not LiberalPartyNS bidding.
