The future of the acute mental health unit on the campus of Bantry General Hospital has been secured following an agreement between the Mental Health Commission and the HSE

The Centre for Mental Health Care and Recovery is located on the campus of Bantry General Hospital and serves a catchment population of around 60,000 people.

At an earlier hearing, HSE solicitor Katherine Kelleher told the court that up to €1.5 million would be provided for work on the building to include the removal of risks there, such as ligature points. The Mental Health Commission has warned that any failure on the part of the HSE to comply with the revised condition would be an offence under the Mental Health Acts.

RTÉ News understands that the Mental Health Commission has been concerned for some time about the physical infrastructure at the building which houses the acute mental health unit in Bantry. And, when inspectors returned and found that those deficiencies hadn't been addressed, a decision was made to attach a condition to the unit's registration to reduce the maximum number of patients who can be accommodated there from 18 to 11.

We are in no way 'emerging' from the pandemic, which is still raging mostly uncontrolled. I'd advise you to check the numbers, if so many governments hadn't stopped broadcasting them. Maybe report THAT.

Fintan O’Toole: Ireland’s dysfunctional health service crushes idealism and rewards cynicismFintan O'Toole: It is beyond belief that in 2023 most of our hospitals are still run with pens and paper. How can you manage a complex system and create personal accountability when there is no real-time data to show exactly what’s going on? Ah, yes, Fintan, a centralised patient system would be best. But people would object. The contrarians wouldn’t want to hand over their medical information to the government. They would think it would be used against them somehow. Perhaps we could learn from management that are doing the right things in the right way? . DonnellyStephen RTENewsAtOne drivetimerte It is recognised that in the institutional setting a bad outcome resulting from no decision being made is less likely to be punished than when a decision is made that results in the same outcome.
