Dr. Matt Strauss won’t miss public health — and vice versa. The interim medical officer of health for Haldimand-Norfolk, who will be resigning 18 months into the job, was very much an activist. Column by bruce_arthur

. After a vaccination drive that predated his arrival, Strauss rescinded Nesathurai’s public health orders regarding migrant workers.

And in September, Strauss appeared on TVO’s “The Agenda” and again argued against public health measures as a whole. He said, “We engaged in a lot of, I think, cruel and coercive measures this past winter in terms of vaccine mandates, capacity restrictions, school closures, lockdowns, and what we found was everyone, not everyone, but the majority of Ontarians got COVID anyway.”

From my perspective, and that of most people with expertise in public health, this is libertarian-style bunk. Strauss’s objections to pandemic policy seem rooted in a principle of uncertainty in medicine: he says only randomized control trials are sufficient evidence for pandemic policy, while doctors will tell you that even in his specialty, internal medicine, there are plenty of decisions made every day that aren’t backed by RCT evidence.

Essentially, an intensivist with no public health experience was put in a county where vaccine uptake was dead last, had a bit of a jump after he arrived, and remained dead last. It was a place that needed real public health expertise, and didn’t get it. Last week, the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit reported a sharp increase in hospitalized COVID patients, from seven to 18, as part of the larger health crisis affecting Canada’s hospitals.
