COLLEGE STATION, Texas — One Texas A&M researcher is studying whether dogs can sniff out bovine respiratory disease, or BRD, which is one of the largest health challenges the cattle industry faces.
If dogs are able to identify individual cows that need intervention, this process may reduce drug cost and use compared to current methodsIn the second round, two more dogs will be selected and samples from cattle homogenous in breed, sex and origin were taken According to Daigle, this study can influence how antimicrobial treatment is administered in commercial beef production. BRD is the leading cause of cattle morbidity and mortality worldwide due to the lack of reliable testing. As of now, cattle are evaluated in groups, and thus, antimicrobial treatments are also applied at a mass administration, rather than at the individual level. The prevalence of the disease in the cattle industry within the U.S. rests above 16%.
