Widespread medical debt is a uniquely American problem, with such debt totaling at least $195 billion in 2019. It was once thought that the problem was that Americans were largely uninsured, but even those with health coverage can run into problems. Over 90% of the U.S. population has some kind of medical insurance, but about 40% of adults say they have at least $250 in medical debt.

System reforms have also led to patients having to pay more at the point of care.

Widespread medical debt is a uniquely American problem. Roughly 40% of U.S. adults have at least $250 in medical debt, according to a"The history of medical debt is basically a history of the changing answer to the following question: When the patient can't pay the bill, who foots it?" said Dr. Luke Messac, an emergency physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston who is writing a book about the history of medical debt.

As health-care prices rose over the past fifty years, patients were being asked to pay more out of pocket when they received care.

If these career political hacks, most of whom are lawyers, would pass tort reform like in Europe It would save Americans over $800Bb in Health care cost

How does the health of Americans compare to the rest of the country? As someone that has traveled a fair amount, I am always amazed at how obese Americans are relative to the rest of the world.

Anyway, too many obese people in the US. Need to eat fewer burgers.

Try $24k because insurance/marketplace screwed us when our son was born via emergency c section, even after our $8k deductible was met.

Insurance is only for those who work 😂, it’s caste system .

Well, considering Canada now believes in euthanasia of course their medical bills will be less.

That’s the next debt crisis POTUS needs to help Americans with.

$250? Wow, that’s terrible. 1/4 the cost of an iPhone

Lol…250 dollars? Most probably have thousands of dollars in debt on car loans.

$250 isn’t debt

The Great Grift!

Here is the real problem. The government should help people with medical issues. The insane increase on medical billing is a real problem. Here is where help is needed instead of student debt. Since the current White House only cares about votes and not people it’s a big issue

Also a uniquely American problem? Having the best healthcare.

that country is just weird!!

Don't set the bar at $250 cmon

$250! What are they going to do?

Illegal immigrants get free healthcare. US citizens get to pay for them.

Our private health insurance model is a disaster for many. High deductible plans are often the only ones affordable, and then out of pocket thousands before any insurance pay

garbage video - to highlight a revolting situation.

America is like a soccer jersey. Nothing but corporate sponsorship

This article misses critical points and is designed to oversimplify and enrage to lead to a specific conclusion.

Since Obama care, cost’s have gone up.

My health insurance just recycled. I need to spend 4k OOP before they cover anything. I’m on a diabetes med that costs $1k for a 90 day supply. My daughter is on a migraine med that costs as much as my mortgage for a 30 day supply. Big pharma is out of control with these prices.

In other words, supply and demand rule.

LanceStryker6 “May have” jesus where have you been

May have?

The privatized , for-profit health care model is a wasteful scam. What other good/service does the consumer not know the true cost to them?

Where are the $1500 deductible plans? I've never seen one for less than $5,700 per person, $12,000 per family....

Well who could have predicted this.

This is stating the obvious.

You mean if someone else is paying, people use more and don't care the cost? If only this basic human nature could have been predicted somehow.
