Galveston County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Erin Barnhart talks about the autopsy room at the new Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office, 1205 Oak St., Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023, in La Marque.A new Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office facility in La Marque will revolutionize that department's operations by tripling its space and providing technologically advanced amenities, county officials say.
The new office also will serve as a training and research center for University of Texas Medical Branch students. “It’s not refurbishment so much as it is a ground-up restoration; so it saved the taxpayers a fair amount of money we can use on other projects,” said County Judge Mark Henry. “Thanks to the medical examiner’s staff for being so patient — we’re probably 20 years past due on building this.”Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Erin Barnhart said the new building will have an immeasurable impact on the services her office provides.
“One of our top priorities is getting those cases done efficiently and in a timely manner in order to help families have as much closure as possible,” Barnhart said. One priority was to have separate air systems installed for each area, such as the morgue, autopsy and decomposition rooms and office spaces to “make a humane and comfortable environment for the people that work here," said Wendy Heger, a principal at the architectural firm Page Southerland Page Inc., which was part of the design process.
