North Wales’s health board postponed all non-urgent procedures scheduled for Tuesday after declaring another internal critical incident. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said it took the decision to try and cope with what it called “unrelenting demand”.
Matthew Taylor, the chief executive of NHS Confederation, said patient delays are being compounded by high rates of flu and CovidHe also blamed the ongoing crisis on longer-term issues of more than 130,000 NHS vacancies and “a decade-long lack of investment in capital and an elective backlog which continues to grow past seven million people”.
“The BMA has repeatedly invited the Government to sit down and talk about the pressures on our health service, but their silence is deafening. It is disingenuous for the Prime Minister to talk about ‘backing the NHS’ in his New Year message, when his own Health Secretary is failing to discuss how this crisis can be fixed.”
“The Health Secretary and ministers have met with unions several times and have been clear their door remains open to further discuss how we can work together to improve the working lives of NHS staff.”
