Health scientists warn recent cold snap saw air quality levels across the country worsen dramatically

All of the cities in the top 10, with the exception of Las Vegas, are located in coastal areas. Las Vegas, while inland, is located between a number of US National Conservation Areas and close to Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

However, the Utility Bidder survey also noted findings by the World Health Organisation that 99 per cent of the world’s population live in places where air pollution levels exceed their guideline limits. While Ireland’s overall average daily score for PM2.5 is generally good, health experts here have warned the recent cold snap brought daily spikes in levels, creating poor air quality at times.

Pat Byrne, programme manager with the EPA, said: “Air quality in Ireland is generally good, however, there are localised issues that are impacting negatively on air quality and our health. In our towns and villages, monitoring identifies high levels of particulate matter associated with burning solid fuels and in our larger cities high levels of nitrogen dioxide is associated with road traffic.”

Study was carried out by an energy company and used 2ndry data sources that didn't include nitrogen oxide levels, the major source of traffic pollution in Dublin. Also, the congestion data conflicts with other study findings.

Especially good air in Palmerstown

As someone who moved from rural wexford to dublin recently, near to the city centre, it amazes me that the air feels less polluted here in Dublin. The smoky fuel ban has done so much to improve things, even though there is plenty of car pollution, it's not as bad as smoky fires

and the highest levels of media pollution.

that may be true but its also in the top 10 for scumbag quality

Of course there is no industry and only 500k - 1M people only

Tell eamon Ryan that.

Big change from two years ago then?

The salad munching greens will say that’s wrong.
