On Christmas Day, 188 babies were born at Western Cape Department of Health public health facilities run across the province. By midnight, a total of 122 boys and 66 girls had been born.

At midnight, a baby girl was delivered at Groote Schuur Hospital, becoming the first child to be welcomed on Christmas day.

She was born to Stella Masunda, weighing 3.130 kg. A minute later, the department reported that Miché Prins, a new mother, had given birth to a second baby girl at Groote Schuur Hospital, weighing 3.2 kg.“Our message to all new parents is that of the importance of the first 1,000 days of a child’s life . Provide your baby with a safe environment and good nutrition,” the provincial health department said.
