Leo Varadkar has risen again to become Taoiseach and leader of the country after two years in the wings as Tánaiste and Government number two.And Mr. Varadkar was officially confirmed as Taoiseach at an audience with President Michael D Higgins at his residence in Aras an Uachtarain in the afternoon. He then returned to the Dáil to commence his second term as Taoiseach.
As he announced his new Cabinet, the Taoiseach acknowledged that the government is facing significant challenges in the coming months. He said: “My decision to take on the role of Minister for Foreign Affairs and most of the defence reflects the fact that my party and the government as a whole view these as critical to our nation.”
The new Taoiseach caused a storm online two weeks ago when a video of him socialising in a nightclub on a night out went viral on the ‘net. The shadow of his leaking of a confidential government document to a friend also continues to haunt him.
